DON'T WORRY about battery life in your BEV Class 8 truck

Owners should expect a VERY long vehicle life


For any new buyer of an electric vehicle, light duty or heavy duty, the last thing to be worried about is battery life.

For logistics and trucking companies, this is particularly important.

As an example, the Volvo VNR electric truck has a 400,000 kilometre warranty on the battery, with paid upgrades to 600,000 kilometres.

What's more, most trucks have a rated life span (typically the point where a battery can only hold 70% of it's original capacity) at 4,000 to 6,000 cycles on their batteries; where 1 cycle is a full 100% to 0% usage.

Owners of a truck like a Volvo VNR Class 8, which has a 275 mile range, should therefore expect accumulated mileage of between 1.1 million and 1.65 million miles before needing to worry about the battery.  This is very high mileage, even for a Class 8 long haul diesel truck.

While this may ultimately drop a bit due to range, load and temperature adjustments, it does give an indication of what freight and logistics companies should expect.

At 70% of original battery capacity, the truck will still have a lot of life left for shorter drayage duties.

And when that truck is finally done, the battery can be either reused in a stationary #energystorage facility or, worst case, be recycled.

Over the truck's life, operators should expect DRASTICALLY lower energy and maintenance costs than a diesel, likely saving hundreds of thousands of dollars.


Of course, the other part of EV truck success is charging.  

Here at Vision Mobility we're working with WattEV, Inc. to grow electric truck charging facilities across North America.  WattEV is installing a number of electric truck charging stations, both fast charge using the Megawatt Charging Standard for over the road long haul trucks, and overnight charging for trucks that serve nearby warehouses.

What's more WattEV have ordered 50 Volvo VNR electric trucks for their Truck-as-a-Service business.
