Will 2017’s Successful Tax Reforms Continue After 2025?
The “largest corporate tax reduction in the history of the US” was a big success. “The results of the [2017] Trump corporate tax reform were more business investment, more growth, more wages for workers, and little impact on government revenue as lower corporate rates were offset by an expanding economy,” said the WSJ. Corporate taxes made up only 9% of federal receipts in FY 2022, with individual income taxes providing 54%. Surprisingly, 80% of that 54% is paid by only 10% of filers with incomes of $200,000 or more. The 2017 overhaul expires at 2025’s end, prompting suggestions for change. Our overall investment optimism is built on our interpretation of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) reporting methodology over the short and intermediate term. This will reinforce that we are in a lower, return-to-pre-Covid inflation cycle which has room to run. It also supports our belief that the corporate world’s adoption and implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) will be a structural force for combating inflation longer term. For the next three to five years, there will be the assist from CPI’s methodology in reducing inflation over the next year. How many investors in mid-October 2022 would have believed that 50% appreciation in the S&P 500 was possible over the next two years? Investors had just absorbed a 25% meltdown in the S&P 500 over the previous ten months. But since October 13, 2022, the S&P 500 has risen from 3,492 to 5,261—up 50.7% on an intraday basis. It has been a nearly two-year upcycle but additional upside potential awaits. Only 56 stocks have outperformed the bull market since October 2022. On one hand, that is discouragingly low. Certain favorable trends suggest a very optimistic outlook for our investment style, even though things could happen to disrupt those trends. There’s been some good news in areas more commonly treated as problem areas, including a world population increase and 3% growth in the global economy 2023. While we see good examples on the world and national stages of learning from experiences, evidence-based decision-making is not always adopted. An Americanized version of a Chinese proverb says the person who believes something can’t be done should at least get out of the way of the person doing it. Sustained higher interest rates and inflation damped deal and exit activity in the US private equity market in 2023. “The growing need for liquidity options will likely drive an explosion in continuation funds that provide cash-out opportunities and secondary sales by fund investors.” The investment community hopes individual investors will step in. Such investors should look for investments that follow the rules, know what “return” to expect for additional risk, and, if entering a secondary offering, know how the assets are valued.
