#WorldBuildingOfTheWeek - Built in seven phases over seven years, the Rising Star school buildings by Ingenieure ohne Grenzen e. V. opened in March 2023 in Hopley, Zimbabwe. Constructed by hand from more than half a million bricks, the linear school buildings arranged around a courtyard are characterized by round arches at the walkways and in the classrooms. Berlin-based architect and project manager Kristina Ziadeh answered a few questions about the project. WA: What makes this project unique? KZ: The Rising Star School is a new center for children in Hopley. Having grown steadily since its foundation, the primary school has become a landmark in the neighborhood of smaller structures after seven years of construction. The expressive appearance is characterized by round arches, where teaching takes place. WA: What is the inspiration behind the design of the building? KZ: The inspiration for the design lies above all in the possibilities of the materials available on site and in the surrounding area. At the start of the project, it quickly became clear that brick was a readily available material and could be an exciting material for school construction thanks to people's knowledge of how to build with it. #GermanBuildingOfTheWeek - The team from Office ParkScheerbarth has designed House 2+ as the new entrance building for the Berlin cultural quarter Holzmarkt 25. As Moojin Park explains, the collaboratively designed wooden building is constructed in such a way that it can be easily dismantled. WA: What is special about this building project? MP: What is exciting about this project is the client and the historical location: In the early 19th century, this stretch of the Spree was a key transshipment point for wood in Berlin, later becoming part of the East-West Berlin border during the GDR era. WA: How does the design respond to the location? MP: The narrow extension is placed in a gap on Holzmarktstrasse, creating a small alley that leads visitors from the street to the banks of the Spree. At the same time, the cultural and gastronomic offerings of the Holzmarkt are also opening up to the street for the first time. An incredible time at DIALOG HOCH 5 | Lust for light and circular construction! In collaboration with the Architektenkammer Berlin and German-Architects, the architecture forum kicked off the first day of belektro with dynamic discussions and insights. Moderated by architecture journalist Thomas Geuder , the event featured lectures by Prof. Jan Blieske ( blieske architects lighting designers ), Prof. Eike Roswag-Klinge ( ZRS Architekten Ingenieure ), and Sabine De Schutter ( Studio De Schutter ). The panel discussion, joined by Theresa Keilhacker , President of the Architektenkammer Berlin , explored pressing issues in architecture and lighting design, with a strong focus on sustainability opportunities and challenges. The day wrapped up with a guided tour of select exhibitors, curated by German-Architects and moderated by Thomas Geuder . #AustriaBuildingOfTheWeek - Schenker Salvi Weber Architekten ZT GmbH have built St. Pölten's new Children's Art Laboratory. Michael Salvi presents the spatially and atmospherically extremely rich building, which was developed on the basis of a physical model. WA: What is special about this building project? MS: When we started the design, we were not aware of any "Children's Art Laboratory" typology. We were therefore faced with a wide range of conceptual possibilities for developing one. Essentially, it is a cultural building for contemporary art. At the same time, the program pursues a cultural-political educational mission: children and young people are to be taught art and culture. WA: What is the inspiration behind this project? MS: We conceived the project as a built landscape that develops from the park: the helix staircase moves along the facade in the field of tension between the interior and exterior space. The shadow of the mighty trees in the neighborhood is intended to overlay the shadow play of the precise wooden slats. The spatial boundaries are intended to be deliberately blurred. #SwissBuildingOfTheWeek - Elisabeth Hobiger-Feichtner presents the rooms and furniture that she and her team designed for a notary's office in Affoltern am Albis. They draw their strength from simple but stylish materials and beautiful detailed solutions. WA: What is special about this building project? EHF: A tenant fit-out for office use is often a rather unexciting planning task, as the ideas of what an office should look like are very rigid: white walls, dark floors, suspended ceilings and standardized white furniture. In this case, however, we were able to work with the users and the client to design rooms that are fun and that people enjoy spending time in. WA: What is the inspiration behind this project? EHF: We wanted to maintain the seriousness of the notary's office, but at the same time create a certain looseness. We wanted to design rooms that have a calming effect, but also have their own, lasting expression - so that when you think back to this special moment, you also remember the interior design and associate it with it in a positive way. #WorldBuildingOfTheWeek - The new Faculty Building at Leiden University , HERTA MOHR, exemplifies circular renovation in the transformation of Cluster Zuid, originally designed by Joop van Stigt for Leiden University's Faculty of Humanities in the late 1970s. As many buildings from the 1970s and 80s near the end of their effective lifespans, choices must be made between demolition and renovation. Architects at De Zwarte Hond in Groningen recently completed this project and shared insights into their approach. WA: What makes this project unique? DZH: While the educational function remained the same, we made the building work differently than before, tying together the separate houses spatially. We kept the outside largely the same because of its historical value and monumental status; for a building which was built in 1980, this is unique. WA: What is the inspiration behind the design of the building? DZH: We brought the 1980 building into the year 2025 by using the design principles that the architect Joop van Stigt originally used. His ideas of structuralism were reinterpreted. We kept the facades, the parking garage, and the structure with the beautiful columns. We also decided to connect old and new by reusing the existing Californian redwood ceilings, making acoustic wall panels out of them. #GermanBuildingOfTheWeek - In Munich, Hild und K have built an overnight shelter with a comprehensive range of services for homeless people. For Matthias Haber, the carefully designed house is both a safe haven and a valuable urban building block. WA: What is special about this building project? MH: The state capital’s overnight accommodation for all homeless people in Munich is unique in Germany, making the task of creating a new building with 730 places for the previously makeshift facility quite unusual. WA: What is the inspiration behind this project? MH: The spatial structure, based on the need to separate different user groups, is typologically based on Theodor Fischer's historic single people's home. When it was built in the 1920s, the surrounding Westend was still an industrial district. The residential development that dominates today was only added later. #AustriaBuildingOfTheWeek - LOVE architecture and urbanism office has designed a large residential complex with shops in Vienna. Mark Jenewein explains how each apartment was given an outdoor space and a beautiful view despite the high density of the development. WA: What is special about this building project? MJ: There was an existing development plan that we had to adhere to. This envisaged several buildings of very different dimensions and volumes. The enormous density on the building site was remarkable, and this is repeatedly discussed critically and emotionally in public. WA: What is the inspiration behind this project? MJ: In high-density projects, avoiding uniformity and uninspired repetition is key, especially with large building masses and close distances. For the H-shaped central building, we aimed to create optimal views for each inner section by highly individualizing the structure. Our solution: "Garden Frames"—unique prefabricated elements mounted on the facade to give each room its own mini garden. #SwissBuildingOfTheWeek - Brechbuehler Walser Architekten have renovated the Zimmeregg forest pool and added two new wooden buildings. Patrick Walser explains why the beautiful building site in a clearing was also a challenge. WA: What is special about this building project? PW: The unusual location in the middle of the forest is certainly unique. You could speak of a dream perimeter, idyllic and surrounded by a dense, all-encompassing tree population. The extensive legal requirements that came with it were also special, of course. WA: What was the inspiration behind this project? PW: The facility, which had become old and had been gradually rebuilt and expanded, was to be renewed and tidied up so that the idyllic character of the forest clearing could once again be brought out to its full potential. The areas were gently reorganized, where possible buildings and components were renewed, supplemented and partly relocated; unnecessary items were cleared out.
