Have you ever heard of #myopia? Myopia, or short-sightedness, makes far objects look blurry. Although myopia, especially in its progressive form where it gets worse over the years, has not yet been fully understood, genetic factors and modern lifestyles with a lot of time spent indoors and intensive near work, for example when using digital devices, are considered to be risks.

Even if the number of people affected varies greatly from region to region, myopia is a global challenge. 🌏 Especially in cases where the prescription is very high it can even lead to loss of vision – this can happen particularly with progressive myopia.    

ZEISS has more than twenty years of experience in myopia management and offers innovative eyeglass lenses. 👓

Eleven-year-old Aidan from China is affected by #myopia – as are nine out of ten students under 20 in some urban regions of #China. Also, worldwide the number of those affected is rising steadily. By 2050, around half of the world's population could be short-sighted. 🤓  

Prevention is key when it comes to myopia, through  
👁️ regular eye examinations, preferably every year and as early as possible,  
🌳 spending at least two hours a day outdoors in daylight and  
💻 reducing close work such as reading and screen work with generous breaks for rest.

Young people explore the world of science and sustainability with EMBL TREC project in Naples, Italy! 🌍🔬  

During a joint workshop between ZEISS’ “A Heart for Science” and Nexus Island, the TREC outreach program, young minds used  advanced microscopes to study microplastics in ocean samples. Through hands-on activities, engaging discussions, and interactive sessions, we hope to raise awareness of the importance of science for #sustainability and inspire the explorers of tomorrow for planetary health. 🌊

Prof. Paul Shearing, Director of the ZERO Institute at the University of Oxford, was among the first scientists in the world to use a ZEISS X-ray microscope to understand the detailed morphology of an electrode. He is helping to advance the next generation of batteries, which he hopes will play an even more substantial role in our lives. And for his work, it’s fundamental that he can zoom in on the individual particles of a battery, where all the fun chemistry happens.

Professor Tamim Asfour believes technology can enhance the human touch. He envisions #robots assisting elderly care nurses with routine tasks, freeing up time for patient care. ⏳👩⚕️👨⚕️ Asfour also emphasizes the importance of human touch with patients: “A robot will never be able to replace a human being. It can't give anyone a hug and comfort them. But robots can support the staff,” he explains.

Supported by the Foundation Carl-Zeiss-Stiftung, his JuBot project brings us closer to compassionate, efficient healthcare.
