Ammonia as a shipping fuel introduces new considerations in safety and ship design. Developing safe and energy-efficient ammonia-fueled ships is a critical milestone in achieving a zero-carbon future for the maritime industry. We are excited to announce the publication of our position paper, created in collaboration with the Global Maritime Forum : "Defining Additionality in the Voluntary Book-and-Claim Market in Deep-Sea Shipping." This position paper introduces a cohesive framework for interpreting "additionality" within the deep-sea shipping industry, with a focus on promoting consistency and integrity in the book-and-claim market. The book-and-claim system enables emission reductions, such as the use of low-carbon fuels, to be tracked and credited along the value chain, even if these actions occur separately from where the fuel is consumed. By aligning additionality with current shipping regulations, this paper aims to create a fair marketplace for all stakeholders—registries, issuers, buyers, and verifiers—while acknowledging that additionality criteria may evolve as the market grows. ''Establishing a common interpretation of additionality is essential for maintaining a level playing field and upholding the integrity of the book-and-claim market. Our MMMCZCS delegation is off to COP29 Azerbaijan ! ✅ The maritime sector is a big part of the climate equation—100,000 commercial vessels worldwide consume roughly 300 million tons of fossil fuel every year, putting our emissions on par with Germany’s. But it’s clear that we’re not only part of the problem; we’re also part of the solution. At the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping , we’re focused on the full picture, from fuel production to emissions at sea. We need to rethink what powers global shipping, and what it means for the decarbonization journey of our industry. We need more than ambition—we need strong regulations to drive investments and scale up production. This is why we're at COP29. Last week, we hosted our second Ammonia Safety Roundtable. The Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping invited key stakeholders from across the maritime and shore-based ammonia ecosystem to discuss the unique safety challenges of ammonia as a fuel. Together, we explored the actions still required to make ammonia a safe and viable fuel option for the global maritime industry, identifying ways we can collectively move forward to achieve this goal. Since our last Roundtable in October 2023, we can note significant progress in ammonia safety, including: ✅ Interim guidelines from the International Maritime Organization for the safety of ships using ammonia as fuel ✅ Ammonia Bunkering Safety & Operational Guidelines issued by SGMF ✅ Insights into to seafarers' willingness to work on ammonia-fueled vessels ✅ Ammonia ship-to-ship transfer pilots that simulate bunkering operations, paving the way for bunkering when ammonia-fuelled vessels become operational The Roundtable fostered a discussion covering various critical areas, including knowledge-sharing between the shore-based ammonia industry and maritime sector, bunkering procedures, human factors, training, regulatory framework development, ship design and onboard safety systems, among others. We appreciate the contributions from our partners, American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) , Danish Maritime Authority , SGMF , INTERTANKO , ClassNK - Nippon Kaiji Kyokai , CF Industries , Lloyd's Register Maritime Decarbonisation Hub, Port of Rotterdam , Yara Clean Ammonia , Wärtsilä Marine , Maritime Technologies Forum, Navigator Gas , Port of Antwerp-Bruges , bp , A.P. Moller - Maersk , Cargill , Stolt Tankers , V.Group and NYK Line . Their commitment continues to propel this critical work forward. While there is still much to be done, we are seeing progress across the ecosystem in preparing ammonia as a safe marine fuel. This event contributes to that ongoing process, addressing the unique safety challenges and building the trust and acceptance essential for industry-wide adoption. Countdown to COP29: Decarbonising hard-to-abate sectors 🏭 In exactly 10 days, Denmark is headed to COP29 Azerbaijan , to push for net-negative emissions, a critical step in achieving the Paris Agreement’s targets. Leading the Group of Negative Emitters (GONE), launched at COP28, Denmark aims to build upon this alliance and drive global commitments toward cutting emissions by over 100%. Through strong public-private partnerships, Denmark is pioneering in resource efficiency, green fuels and carbon management. As one of the world’s largest shipping nations, Denmark is home to the world’s first container vessel to sail on green methanol and with significant CO₂ storage capacity in our subsoil, Denmark is paving the way for carbon capture solutions. 🚢 Countdown to IMO MTMs: Taking Stock after MEPC 82 🌍 Our latest 'Countdown' newsletter covers the progress made during two intense weeks of negotiations at ISWG-GHG 17 and MEPC 82. Our experts were on the ground, participating in critical discussions on short- and mid-term measures that are vital for meeting the International Maritime Organization 's 2023 GHG Strategy. 🏆 The greatest achievement? A clear shift in focus among Member States from debating *if* net-zero is possible to *how* we can achieve it. As regulations evolve, both technical and economic measures, like the Goal-Based Fuel Standard (GFS) and GHG pricing, greater convergence will be needed on sufficient measures that can support a just transition to net-zero. We are proud to launch our latest report entitled ‘Investigating maritime community perceptions of ammonia as a marine fuel’. To better understand the maritime community's perceptions of ammonia and key safety concerns, the Center surveyed over 2,000 respondents from across the shipping industry. The pool of respondents represented both seafaring and ashore professions and covered a range of different ages and shipping segments. The key takeaways from our report are: –– The survey found that the majority (approximately 59%) of respondents from across the maritime community were willing to sail on or work with ammonia-fueled vessels. –– Respondents' acceptance of ammonia as a marine fuel was conditional on appropriate training and certification. Top training priorities included management of ammonia leakage, emergency response and firefighting, maintenance and bunkering, and regulation. –– Respondents' primary safety concerns regarding ammonia as a marine fuel included toxicity and human health, leakage and emergency response, maintenance and storage, and air pollution. The results from the survey can support the maritime industry to develop the regulations, guidelines, and training requirements that will create a safer working environment for the maritime community working with ammonia as a fuel.
