Leading Moroccan holding SAFARI Group and German company Knauf, through their joint venture CMPE, are investing in a state-of-the-art plasterboard production factory in the province of Safi. This cooperation also includes investments in new professional training centres which benefit from financial support from DEG.
A few weeks ago, I had the honour of attending the signing of the cooperation agreement between DEG and CMPE chaired by Saïda Karim Lamrani.

Last week I had the pleasure to participate together with Jochen von Frowein, CFA  at the Infrastructure Investor Global Summit. The conversations I had at the #IIGSummit gravitated towards the pivotal role of battery energy storage systems (#BESS) in advancing renewable energy. 
As grid bottlenecks pose challenges to renewable energy expansion, BESS emerges as a critical solution, stabilizing grids and mitigating the risk of potential energy price cannibalization during peak production hours. Encouragingly, the decreasing cost of batteries has build up significant developer and investor interest for BESS solutions also in #emerging markets. At KfW  DEG  we're not only investing in BESS through #debt and #equity products, but also providing advisory support via DEG Impulse‘s business support services to optimize BESS solutions  for our client’s projects. 

Last week I also came across concerning data from the Copernicus ECMWF Climate Change Service. Did you know that 2023 was the hottest year on record, with global temperatures nearing the 1.5°C limit?

A LOT more needs to be done to stay below 1.5°C:
According to the United Nations  Environment Program’s (#UNEP) emission gap report, predicted 2030 emissions must be reduced by at least 42% compared to current policy scenarios, to reach the Paris Agreement goals of limiting global warming on average to 1.5 C. That is unfortunately a more and more unlikely scenario -  but exceeding 1.5°C would take us into uncharted territory.

I highly recommend you to take a look at Johan Rockström ’s talk about #planetary boundaries and tipping points – his insightful presentation is a stark reminder that we need to hold on to the 1.5°C as a physical limit and that we must collectively intensify our efforts to fight global warming.

🎉 2023 has been a successful year for DEG, both financially and in terms of #DevelopmentImpact. 

💡 We committed around EUR 1.9 billion for private sector investment in developing and emerging market countries (2022: EUR 1.6 billion) and mobilised a further EUR 613 million from other capital providers. The portfolio grew to EUR 10.3 billion, passing the 10-billion threshold for the first time. DEG achieved a positive operating result once again in the reporting year, which strengthened its equity basis and thus its ability to boost its promotional business. 

👩‍💼💚 The development #impact of DEG-financed projects was positive in 2023. For instance, DEG’s existing customers employed some 3.3 million people and generated #LocalIncome of EUR 235 billion in the reporting year. Co-financed #RenewableEnergy projects produced 31 TWh of #GreenElectricity for approximately 32 million people last year, thereby avoiding more than 22 million tonnes of CO2 emissions.
