This week, aboard the #JUICE spacecraft the Laser Altimeter instrument #GALA has taken part in Moon and Earth fly-by maneuvers in sequence – unprecedented in space flight history.

JUICE science instruments were operated during the lunar flyby and recorded test data under challenging conditions as distance changed swiftly during closest approach. The results will help to validate and further improve test parameter settings for the future exploration of Jupiter’s icy moons.

GALA was developed under responsibility of German Aerospace Center (DLR) with substantial contributions from HENSOLDT and will reach its final destination – Jupiter’s icy moon Ganymede – in 2034. We look forward to further collaborate with DLR to achieve the objectives of this exciting mission and to explore our planetary habitat!

Welcome (back) EDEN LUNA! 

Frisch gewartet und mit neuem Logo ist unsere EDEN LUNA Mobile Test Facility zurück am Institut für Raumfahrtsysteme. Das Forschungs-Gewächshaus war zuvor im Rahmen des EDEN ISS Projektes für fünf Jahre in der Antarktis und hat über diese Zeit die #Crews der #Neumayer-Station III mit frischem Gemüse versorgt. 🌱❄️ 

Nun wird der Container im EDEN LUNA Projekt mit neuen Technologien ausgestattet und soll danach an die analoge Mondsimulationsanlage LUNA in Köln angeschlossen werden – das Ziel: die Testung erster Prozeduren und Anforderungen an ein Mondhabitat mit einem fast geschlossenen (Bio-) Lebenserhaltungssystem. Für mehr frisches Gemüse auf zukünftigen #Raumfahrtmissionen! 🚀 🌑 🥬

Additive Fertigungsverfahren spielen eine zentrale Rolle bei der Entwicklung einer nachhaltigeren Luftfahrt: Sie ermöglichen es uns, im Herstellungsprozess erhebliche Mengen an Energie einzusparen und gleichzeitig leichtere, aber dennoch robuste Bauteile zu fertigen. Dies ist nicht nur ein Schritt in Richtung einer nachhaltigeren Produktion, sondern auch ein wichtiger Beitrag zur Reduzierung der CO2-Bilanz in der Luftfahrt.
 
Die Transformation der Luftfahrtbranche und deren Entwicklungen waren bei meinem Besuch bei Premium AEROTEC in Varel mit Händen greifbar. Als Airbus-Tochter ist Premium Aerotec ein Vorreiter, wenn es darum geht, Fertigungssysteme zu entwickeln, die Flugzeugteile mittels Zerspanung und 3D-Druck effizient und ressourcenschonend herstellen. Ihr konsequentes Engagement für Material- und Energieeinsparungen ist ein wichtiger Schritt auf dem Weg zu klimafreundlicherem Fliegen.
 
Vielen Dank an das Team von Premium Aerotec für die wertvollen Einblicke und den inspirierenden Austausch. Solche fruchtbaren Partnerschaften zwischen Forschung und Industrie sind entscheidend, um die Vision des klimafreundlichen Fliegens Realität werden zu lassen.

🥇 And the winner is…
 ... the team from Technische Universität Berlin, with their concept "CHARGE".
 
Yesterday we hosted the 8th Design Challenge final event of the German Aerospace Center (DLR). Congratulations to the winners and to all other participants for the hard work and efforts put into this!

CHARGE (Carbon-neutral High-efficiency Aircraft for ReGional Electric flight) employs a combination of a box-wing configuration with distributed electric propulsion (DEP) to achieve high aerodynamic and propulsive efficiency. The concept relies solely on batteries due to their extremely high efficiency. CHARGE is designed to transport 110 passengers over distances of up to 894 kilometers. Their concept impressed the jury with an outstanding report in which all design decisions were thoroughly justified and explained. All key disciplines were comprehensively covered, and the use of innovative technologies was supported by solid research.

The members of the team who came up with this design are Lennart Wauer, Leonid Wenz, Tim Schulz, Mathias Tekkel, Luca Kriebel and Clemens Ehrich.

🏆 Only a few hours left...

...before the winning team of the 8th DLR Design Challenge of the German Aerospace Center (DLR) is announced! At the closing event in Hamburg today, the six participating teams will present their concepts to the judges.

The participating teams were tasked with designing an economical and climate-friendly short-haul aircraft for use in a regional route network from the year 2050. They had the freedom to choose the passenger capacity and range of their concept to most efficiently serve a given route network.

After the judges have evaluated the technical reports, the teams must now present and defend their results in this final step. Afterwards, the jury will meet one last time to determine the final winner.

Aviation faces enormous economic and ecological challenges. Therefore, revolutionary new ideas and approaches are required to shape the aviation technology of the future. Since 2017, students have competed annually in the #DLR Design Challenge with their forward-looking aircraft designs. 🏅🛫

Meet the Top 3 of the DLR Challenge 2024 "Applied Research for Disruptive Innovation". These exciting innovations from Earth and Space, submitted by three strong consortia from research and industry, convinced our jury for the DLR Challenge. The three winning consortia will start their journey together with the German Space Agency at DLR. Next stop: Berlin.

▶ VibraVoid – Vibration Avoidance with Acoustic Black Holes: This innovative mechanical solution reduces vibration and shock in spacecraft without adding mass.

▶ StellarHeal – Innovative wound care for wound healing in space: Wound healing in space is affected by radiation and microgravity. This solution offers faster recovery.

▶ AGREE – Avoiding Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Rare Earth Element production by transferring space resource technology to Earth.

Visiting the Scout Rover: Prof Markus Ryll from the Chair of Autonomous Aerial Systems at Technische Universität München
 
🚀 Exciting update from the field! 🚀

Prof. Markus Ryll from TUM University conducted an in-depth inspection of our scout rover, focusing on its functional capabilities and performance metrics. 🧑🔬🔬

Together with our team he evaluated how autonomous navigation systems, sensor arrays, and sample collection modules could be integrated in the rover system. 

Prof. Markus Ryll’s main focus are real-time control of aerial platforms in unknown, dynamic and possible cluttered environments and enabling aerial platforms to conduct aerial manipulation tasks as grasping, inspection by touching or transportation.

The aim of the collaboration is to advance rover autonomy, as well as to carry out study work.

Main focus:

·      Autonomous risk assessment for the best way forward in lava caves with obstacles that are difficult to overcome. 

·      Classification and risk assessment of obstacles (stones, trenches, etc.). 

·      Machine-learning, based on the training with a large number of different obstacles to categorise new obstacles.

·      Gaits Research: different gaits can be advantageous, depending on the type of surface and the desired speed.

Our collaboration and interdisciplinary exchange are critical, to ensure optimal operation in preparation for our upcoming missions. 🌍🛰️

When talking about how to tackle the future challenges in aviation you need a strong, strategic partner – such as the DLR! 🤝✈️💡

We already met last year and defined various topics for common research, such as ATM and cockpit, climate and emission and many more!
 
This year, we focused on which cooperations and possible joint contents we currently see, such as:
🔹 How to reduce fuel consumption by further developing AeroSHARK, an innovative aircraft surface film that imitates the aerdodynamic properties of sharkskin
🔹 How to use IT to counteract limitations of infrastructure, e.g. smart allocation of gates in peak times (as this process alone is influenced of thousands of parameters)
🔹 How to enable optimized, intelligent traffic management – and thus reduce up to 4 % CO2 reduction by 2040.
 
Our joint goals are to ensure safe and sustainable flight operations amid traffic growth. How? By using current and new technologies, using synergies in research and analyzing data. The earlier we start, the better!
