There has been a slowdown in the growth of Germany's EV market. But what about the rest of the EU?🚗⚡

It's time to take a closer look at how Germany compares to the EU on the EV market.

Germany, the automotive powerhouse of Europe, reached a record high in 2023. In July 2023, electric vehicles accounted for around 20% of newly registered cars in Germany.  There is no doubt that government incentives, robust charging infrastructure and increasing consumer awareness were driving this remarkable growth. 

However, there are also some negative developments in this area. In July 2024, electric cars only made up 12.9% of new registrations. Furthermore, the federal government's goal of putting 10 million electric vehicles on the road by 2030 seems almost too ambitious, given that there were only around 1.5 million electric cars in Germany as of April.

The EU as a whole is experiencing a surge in EV registrations. There has been a 1.3% increase in new registrations of electric cars compared to the previous year. 

Germany is the top country in the EU for newly registered electric cars so far in 2024, with over 25%. The UK, which is no longer an EU member, is in second place with over 20%. Norway, the Netherlands, and Sweden are setting an inspiring example with higher adoption rates in general. 

The EU's Green Deal, which aims for climate neutrality by 2050, is pushing member states to enhance their EV infrastructure and incentives.

In summary, it is clear that Germany remains a strong participant in the EU when it comes to the expansion of electric mobility, despite a decline in registrations. However, a rethink is necessary in both the EU and Germany to achieve the set goals. 💚

elvah’s way to pay transparency 💰

Beginning of 2024, we did our People & Culture project planning and among others, Nina Ruddeck, Tyson Dsouza and me decided to increase the pay transparency. But why did we come up with this topic? We partially lacked representative benchmark data in order to be able to assess what fair salaries are, both internally and externally, and also we were able to recognize this form of unclarity and dissatisfaction within the team as a rating in our Pulse Surveys. This was something we definitely wanted to improve on. 

# 1 Complete salary benchmarking and establish salary bands

One of the steps towards more transparency was the implementation of a compensation management tool, we decided to go with Figures. With this, we were able to easily conduct a benchmarking of our current salaries and define our own compensation policy as well as salary bands. Paying fair salaries is and already was highly important for us, but being able to easily keep track of possible market changes and to react accordingly, is a game changer. 🚀

# 2 Communicate changes and provide access

After aligning with all people leads and informing the team about the update, we invited everyone to the tool and by now, the whole team is able to see their respective salary band, including all levels available. 🎉 Being open about how compensation decisions are made and how the career development looks like, can help employees feel valued and appreciated, which supports us in building a culture of trust and mutual respect.

# 3 Share it with the public

Besides the internal positive aspects, competitive salaries are also a key factor in attracting the best candidates. While my colleague Tyson Dsouza introduced Greenhouse as our new recruiting tool, we took another step ahead and also added the salary ranges to our job postings. With this, we set clear expectations towards the candidates but also show, that we really live by our values. 💚

# 4 There is more to come

However, implementing salary bands is not the end of the road in making our processes more transparent. As a next step, we want to introduce a career framework, which will help us to show structured guidelines for career progression within elvah and also to define internally, why employees are allocated at their respective career level. 📈

Investing in salary benchmarking is not just about matching industry standards, it’s about building a strong foundation for attracting, retaining, and motivating your workforce.

More electricity transparency at the charging station? Yes, please! 💚

A pilot project by Lichtblick, Granular Energy, and Decarbonize aims to help drivers of electric cars better understand the origin of the electricity at the charging station. ⁠

Using the Energy Track & Trace platform, it transparently shows which renewable plant the electricity at the charging station comes from and issues granular guarantees of origin for the quality of the electricity - on a quarter-hourly basis. 🕒️⁠

Guarantees of origin are not only the basis for the traceability of the green characteristics of the electricity but are also increasingly being used to calculate the carbon footprint of the electricity purchased. ⁠

However, there are some critical opinions on this topic, because due to the current market structure, transparency does not always reach the end customer.

The most EV-friendly countries in Europe are at the forefront of the transition to a sustainable future. 🌱

Norway continues to set the standard for EV adoption with its impressive network of charging stations and substantial government incentives. Almost 80% of newly registered cars are EV’s, making it a true pioneer in sustainable transportation.🇳🇴 

The Netherlands has a coverage of over  200 charging stations per 100 km in parts of the country and boasts one of the most comprehensive and convenient charging infrastructures in Europe. With around 100.000 public charging points, electric vehicle drivers have convenient access to a power source wherever they may be. 🇳🇱

Denmark is a global leader in electromobility, with over 36% of new registrations for electric cars in 2023, supported by a robust subsidy program. Additionally, Denmark boasts an extensive charging infrastructure, with 190 stations per 100 km in select regions. 🇩🇰 

Sweden’s dedication to green energy and sustainable transportation is reflected in the growth of its EV market. The combination of government incentives and an expanding network of fast chargers is driving the accelerated adoption of EVs across the country. 🇸🇪

The progress in Norway, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Sweden exemplifies the substantial advancement in EV adoption and infrastructure across Europe.These steps are necessary to move forward to a greener, cleaner tomorrow.

Mehr als 2000 km mit dem Elektroauto durch Südengland & Cornwall! 🚗🔋 

Vor unserer Tour fragten unsere Nachbarn: „Macht ihr das mit dem Elektroauto? Das geht?“ Und wie das geht!

Wir haben hauptsächlich an Superchargern geladen und hatten den Vorteil, dass an unserer Unterkunft in Cornwall 32A Wallboxen (kostenlos!) zur Verfügung standen.

Die Ladeinfrastruktur war gefühlt etwas dünner als in Deutschland, besonders in Cornwall. Auch wenn der nächste Supercharger nur 10 Minuten von unserer Unterkunft entfernt war, war es in der Nähe die einzige (Schnell-)Lademöglichkeit. Entsprechend wenige Elektroautos haben wir auf den Straßen gesehen. Schnell-Ladestationen fanden sich meist an Tankstellen oder Rastplätzen. Das Ad-hoc-Laden via Kreditkarte (kontaktlos) lief einwandfrei, war aber mit 79p pro kWh nicht gerade günstig. 🔌

Wir haben uns vorher informiert, wie die Ladeinfrastruktur aussieht und wo wir laden können, also gab es hier keine Überraschungen. Trotz der etwas dünneren Infrastruktur hatten wir zu keiner Zeit Reichweitenangst oder Probleme, eine Lademöglichkeit zu finden.

Hinzu kommt, dass man durch die Geschwindigkeitsbegrenzung von max. 113 km/h auf Autobahnen und Fernstraßen sowie die häufig einspurigen Straßen in Cornwall (bei denen man dann naturgemäß sehr langsam fahren muss) sehr sparsam unterwegs ist. 🐌 

Mit dem Model 3 haben wir durchschnittlich  nur ca. 15 kWh/100 km (inkl. Ladeverluste) verbraucht. 🔋
