Halal Processing Under Scrutiny: Addressing Key Risks in the Spice and Ingredients Industry Within the halal industry landscape, HALAL CONTROL GmbH (HC) Germany 🇩🇪has always upheld an uncompromising stance on product integrity. Within the spice and ingredients industry -especially in sectors supplying to meat processors- the risk of cross-contamination with haram materials is probable. Contaminants can include derivatives like animal protein powders, gelatin, blood plasma, collagen, hydrolyzed proteins, and even enzymes and cultures grown on haram media. These materials, especially in dry form, can easily become airborne, affecting other products and compromising halal integrity. Our experience over the last two decades has consistently highlighted the necessity for thorough transformations of entire facilities and sites, not just production lines. This includes replacements of gaskets, filters, exhaust systems, and flexible pipes, as well as comprehensive operational protocols to ensure product integrity at every stage. Often, this commitment to the strict HC integrity guidelines means that HALAL CONTROL must respectfully decline certification for facilities unable to meet these exhaustive requirements. Nonetheless, we remain deeply concerned by the practices of some accredited #halalcertification bodies, who prioritize a business-oriented approach over the #Amanah , interpreting halal standards with leniency (easier, faster & cheaper mentality). They allow only basic separation practices (if any), which fall short of the rigorous requirements needed to uphold true halal integrity - just for the sake to do the business. For materials highly susceptible to cross-contamination, simple cleaning or temporary separation of production lines is inadequate in safeguarding halal product and purity integrity in this industry. At HALAL CONTROL we call on halal standardization bodies to consider a shift towards risk-based standards that thoroughly address contamination risks, moving beyond segregation norms. Strengthening these standards is essential for safeguarding product purity, enhancing credibility, and fostering consumer trust in the #halalindustry . Additionally, a structured and effective cross-sectional risk assessment across the entire #halalcompliance ecosystem (from standards and accreditation to certification and industry) should feed a #corruption #index system, which should be developed and implemented. Since our establishment in 2001, our commitment is rooted in the deliverance of Amanah to the public and private sector -upholding trust and #integrity above all else. Kudos to JAKIM! Opinion: At HALAL CONTROL , we firmly advocate for the implementation of effective, and more importantly, continuous ⚡️ risk assessments on all #halalcertification bodies currently approved by Jabatan Kemajuan Islam Malaysia (JAKIM) . We are particularly concerned about the persistence of corrupt practices in the sector. Unfortunately,certification bodies are still able to obtain credentials from accreditation bodies by merely fulfilling formal requirements, while sidestepping the spirit of the system. The development and introduction of a robust risk assessment framework is crucial for maintaining the integrity of the halal compliance sector. Such a mechanism is crucial in fostering transparency, accountability, trust, credibility, and confidence among industry players, consumers, and other stakeholders. The halal ecosystem is founded on ethical principles and best practices. Its mission is to consistently deliver credible, ethical products and services for the benefit of society at large. The industry must embrace this value-driven ecosystem to ensure it truly serves the global community. Entities must not #exploit the system or bypass the #Amanah (entrusted responsibility) for personal gain through unethical practices. Alarmingly, certification bodies with a track record of misconduct still continue to receive credentials despite their known corrupt behavior. Implementing a systematic risk assessment approach would help expose these unethical practices and build a corruption index to hold such players accountable. Blockchain will bring some improvements, but it is not a silver bullet. While it can significantly enhance transparency and traceability, its effectiveness depends on the integrity of those inputting data. Corrupt certification bodies can still manipulate the system if there isn’t proper oversight. It’s time for compliance 2.0. We need improvements at a systemic level, across all tiers of the compliance system - regulatory, accreditation, and certification. At some point, bodies that consistently fail to meet ethical standards should be delisted and stripped of their credentials by JAKIM. On the other hand, the industry should, for integrity and responsibility reasons, avoid partnering with halal certification bodies of low repute that promote an “easier, faster, and cheaper” business model. Ironically, many of these bodies now tout trendy terms like “integrity” and “ethical values” in their marketing. In conclusion, the halal compliance sector must prioritize best practices that consistently uphold trust and credibility. By developing and introducing effective mechanisms, it can be ensured that the Amanah (trust) is fulfilled for both the public and private sectors. Following the closing meeting, BPJPH formally handed over the assessment report documenting this outcome.
