Full house at the Berlin Science Week at our Deep Dive #ResearchComLab ! 🤩 What an amazing night at the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin ! 🦕 Sitting between prehistoric mammals and meteorites, we discussed how to communicate tricky topics in research communication with Humboldt fellow and migration expert Sanam Roohi ( Center for Advanced Internet Studies (CAIS) gGmbH /Kulturwissenschaftliches Institut Essen) and climate journalist Adrianna Borowicz ( Deutsche Welle ) – both alumni of our #ResearchComLab . At the panel, moderated by Stephanie Siewert (Alexander von Humboldt Foundation), we presented some of the insights from the most recent #ResearchComLab on the conflict zones of #Migration , #ClimateChange and #AI . ◾ Why exactly are these issues so sensitive and tricky to communicate? ◾ What are hurdles but also, how can research and media collaborate to tell engaging, trustworthy and accessible stories? During the discussion we emphasised the role of human stories and protagonists in #SciComm , the need for more local and diverse voices, and more nuanced approaches in migration reporting that avoid scapegoating. Especially in climate communication – where topics are oftentimes highly politicised – we need more relatable stories and a solution-focused journalism, presenting simple, actionable steps over disaster reporting.
