We archived a significant milestone for the new central Hospital in Georgsheil, close to the North Sea! We just celebrated the groundbreaking ceremony alongside the team from WES LandschaftsArchitektur and several distinguished guests. In attendance were Managing Director Dirk Balster, State Health Minister Dr. Andreas Philippi, District Administrator Olaf Meinen, Mayor of Emden Tim Kruithoff, as well as representatives from the district and everyone involved in the planning process. This project merges the three hospitals in Aurich, Emden, and Norden into one shared medical center. The new campus aims to provide modern working conditions and a high-quality experience while fostering a shared identity. Situated on an artificially created dwelling mound, the buildings are designed as a loose campus layout, centered around a communal area. The main building features a two-story base supporting three ward blocks of varying heights. Additionally, the psychiatric department is housed in a separate four-story building, and a three-story supply center completes the ensemble to the west. In the Rhythm of the Arcs: In the city of Nanchang, a new train station has been built based on designs by gmp. The station is the centerpiece of a new TOD area in eastern Nanchang, which will include office spaces for start-ups, shops, spaces for cultural activities and creative industries as well as residential units. A distinctive feature of the station’s design is the three-aisled arc structure, which consists of a steel construction of 14 rows of triple arc elements. The central arc spans 96 meters, creating a spacious, column-free area in the middle. A three-story continuous space, a kind of “urban living room”, connects the main halls, taxi stands, and the subway stations across different levels. For Nanchang’s approximately five million residents, the station serves as a new transportation hub in the eastern part of the city. The Ground Traffic Center (GTC) model used in modern airports was applied to the station’s infrastructure to enable efficient and fast passenger flow into the city. Its connection to the high-speed rail network allows for quick travel to other major cities, enabling employees at nearby businesses to commute to work from more distant locations. Exciting progress at the Wuxi Olympic Sports Center! On September 19, we celebrated the topping out of Phase I's steel structure. This achievement was marked by the installation of the final beam of the main roof over a natatorium for 2,000 spectators. The spectacular biomimetic arch support structure creates a column-free spatial experience for competitive sports. The state-of-the-art sports park will also include a stadium with 60,000 seats and a multifunctional arena with a capacity of 18,000. In cooperation with engineers from Arup , gmp has developed a holistic sustainability concept for the sports park. The project adopts the sponge city concept, integrating natural waterways and modern rainwater management to enhance climate resilience and mitigate flooding. The landscape design, developed in cooperation with WES LandschaftsArchitektur , incorporates generous open areas and flood control basins, ensuring large quantities of water are absorbed and released slowly, supporting a healthier microclimate. This innovative approach will benefit both the environment and the community, creating a vibrant space for sports and recreation. The ambitious timeline is well underway, with initial construction having started in January 2024 and full completion expected by 2025. Stay tuned for more updates! What an incredible few weeks it has been in New York! Our exhibtion 𝗨𝗠𝗕𝗔𝗨.𝗡𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 concluded on November 6, after an inpiring four-week run. We showcased designs, plans, and models that adressed the global challenges of UMBAU (conversion), as part of the New York architecture and design festival, 𝗔𝗿𝗰𝗵𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿, and also featured in the 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝗛𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗬𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸𝗲𝗻𝗱. During the exhibtion, we hosted two engaging panel talks: "Cultural Transformations: Rethinking Spaces & Places for Art" and "A Greener Path: Adaptive Reuse & Sufficiency", where we exchanged ideas with notable architecture professionals. We extend our heartfelt thanks to our hosts at the Goethe Institute New York, our esteemed panel guests, and everyone who contributed to the success of this exhibtions. A special thanks to ERCO for their exceptional lighting that brought our displays to life! As we bid farwell to our New York exhibtion, we also celebrate today's 𝗧𝗮𝗴 𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗨𝗺𝗯𝗮𝘂𝗸𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿 (Conversion Culture Day). Observed every year on November 8, this day, led by the Bundestiftung Baukultur (Federal Builing Culture Association), highlights the importance of sustainable, resource-efficient buildings within existing structures. After 10 exciting days, our traveling exhibition “UMBAU. Nonstop Transformation” at the Architektur Galerie Berlin recently ended. At the opening, Stephan Schütz (gmp Executive Partner) drew a line from the significance of UMBAU to explicit examples of Eastern Modernism. As part of a screening of the award-winning short film “TXL - Berlin Tegel”, founding partner Volkwin Marg spoke with director Lukas Schmid and moderator Veronika Brugger about the early days of gmp, whose founding point, so to speak, was the competition win for the iconic Berlin Tegel Airport. On the final day the curators Christian Hellmund (gmp Partner), markus pfisterer (gmp Associate Partner) and Detlef Jessen-Klingenberg (gmp Head of Communications) gave a guided tour of the exhibition. We would like to thank everyone who made this wonderful exhibition possible and, of course, especially all the visitors, to whom we were able to bring the UMBAU practice of our office and the importance of UMBAU for architecture a little closer. 🎉 Exciting News 🎉: After years of planning and an intensive construction phase, the completion of the Danube Valley Bridge Linz was officially celebrated on 25 October 2024! Our founding partner Volkwin Marg, along with representatives from the project team, participated in the celebrations marking the completion of the bridge. In close cooperation with the engineering firm schlaich bergermann partner and Baumann + Obholzer ZT GmbH , we were involved as architects in the design of this extraordinary project. The bridge, a "true" suspension bridge without supporting pylons, spans an impressive 300 meters and is globally unique in its scale. As part of the new A26 motorway, it forms the centerpiece of a complex construction project that includes not only the bridge but also tunnel systems and a new highway connection. The construction of this bridge-tunnel combination was particularly challenging due to the densely populated urban environment. Together with sbp and Baumann und Obholzer, we succeeded in developing innovative solutions for environmental and noise protection. With its delicate design and architectural elegance, the Donautalbrücke is becoming a new landmark for Linz. We are proud to have contributed to this exciting project! What an honor: the Alsterschwimmhalle has received the “Building of the Year” award from the AIV Architekten-und Ingenieurverein Hamburg e. V. ! “Now that the conversion is complete, it seems as if it was always planned this way, as if it couldn't make sense any other way. For this lightness, this elegance and nonchalance, it is well known that you need a few ingredients to reach for the top shelf: Profound experience and a spirit of research, persuasion and intuition, perseverance and the combined efforts of many very different players,” said Peter Olbert, praising the work of gmp and its partners in the laudatory speech - and continued: ”Here in the Alsterschwimmhalle, every citizen has access, is visible in all its splendor and uniqueness.” The AIV has been presenting the “Building of the Year” award since 1979. Every year, the public spotlight is on exemplary buildings and urban developments in Hamburg whose outstanding quality is the result of successful collaboration between architects, engineers and developers. Celebrating 50 Years of Tegel: This fall marks the anniversary of Berlin Tegel Airport (TXL), a pivotal project that launched gmp as a leading architectural firm. Although flights ceased at Tegel in November 2020, its legacy remains significant to us. Over its 46 years, Tegel transformed from a gateway to West Berlin into the capital airport of unified Germany. The airport's innovative design was planned to accommodate future expansions seamlessly, with all elements—from ceilings to fixtures—crafted around a consistent geometric framework. The triangular grid layout is echoed in the elevations, and the exposed concrete shell construction is visible both inside and out. The central area houses primary functions, while the ring of departure gates facilitates decentralized passenger and aircraft handling on a single level. Beyond the airport's design, gmp also developed detailed designs for operational buildings, roads, bridges, runways, landscaping, information systems, and interior fittings.
