In “Masse mit Klasse”, the TV show Galileo takes a closer look at the production of various products. The special thing about the format is that two manufacturers are always visited, one with a focus on manual work or small-scale production and one that specializes in large quantities. A few weeks ago, the editors of “Masse mit Klasse” visited both our factory in Mettmann and the factory in China of the German manufacturer WMF . There, they looked over the shoulders of the workers and took a close look at the similarities and differences in the production process. Our Co-Managing Partner and Production Manager Matthias Seibel was happy to answer their many questions as he explained the manufacturing process in detail, from the metal sheet to the fork and spoon. We were happy to support Hendrik Lucka in his bachelor's thesis "Besteck & Stigma" and are very impressed by the result. Hendrik explored the intersection of design and disabilities. Looking deeper into food and especially eating because they are fundamental to everyone, he noticed how conventional cutlery doesn't suit everyone's needs, especially individuals with motor impairments who struggle to use standard utensils. The design of adaptive cutlery can differ significantly from traditional designs, creating a division between those who can use conventional cutlery and those who rely on adaptive aids. This distinction restricts access to aesthetically pleasing, designer cutlery for those who need adaptive solutions. To bridge this gap, the author engaged with a diverse group of individuals, both with and without disabilities, to create a versatile cutlery set. This set includes a knife, fork, and spoon with three interchangeable handles – two silicone and one bronze. Users can customize their grip and stability by combining these handles in various ways. The silicone handles focus on grip enlargement and slip resistance, while the bronze handle adds weight for improved stability, especially for individuals with tremors. Hendrik explains that this cutlery design isn't a complete solution to eliminating discrimination against and stigmatization of people with disabilities. However, his work is supposed to serve as a catalyst for dialogue and critical examination of existing systems and practices. 🙏 Hendrik for the interesting collaboration and 👏 to the inspiring project and convincing outcome! 2023 was a very special year for Mono. We knew it would be Mono Tee's 40th birthday and we had ideas about how we could celebrate this anniversary. But we couldn't have imagined how much creativity, exciting encounters and beautiful events this celebration would bring. The Mono Classic Side Table is a special story of this anniversary year. It is one of ten objects that were created as part of the Mono Residency. It is a tribute by designer Marie Radke to the Mono Classic teapot, which Mono launched on the market in 1983 in collaboration with Tassilo von Grolman. Five Mono Classic Side Tables have now found a new home. One of them is with Marie Radke, the other four with the lucky winners of our raffle.
