What a finale at the Bundeswettbewerb Künstliche Intelligenz BWKI in Tübingen: whether predicting heart disease, protecting bees or intelligent water control in droughts, students are using AI to solve everyday and global problems. Germany's Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier visited the event and took a look at all the projects. The BWKI was launched in 2018 by our institute and Director Bernhard Schölkopf and Wieland Brendel , among others, and has since encouraged young people to actively demonstrate their skills in the field of #AI research. The host is now the Tübingen AI Center . The Carl Zeiss Foundation has been the main sponsor since 2020. Big shoutout to Hassan Shahmohammadi for successfully defending his doctoral thesis! "My Ph.D. research focused on advancing multi-modal language learning, specifically through the development of numerical representations of language that integrate both textual and visual data. Currently, I am continuing this research journey as a research scientist at the Sony R&D center in Stuttgart, where I am excited to apply my insights to real-world applications." In 2020, Hassan joined IMPRS-IS under the supervision of Professors Hendrik Lensch and Harald Baayen. His research focused on developing cognitively plausible word and sentence embeddings that closely align with human judgments. Additionally, at the intersection of language and vision, he introduced the first automated pipeline for figurative and abstract visualization, for which he received the Outstanding Paper Award at the EMNLP 2023 conference. 👩🎓 🎉 Congratulations Lisa Schmors for successfully defending your doctoral thesis recently. Many congratulations on this huge milestone! "During my PhD at IMPRS-IS, I used machine learning tools to investigate neural mechanisms in the brain. Through diverse statistical methods, I explored how single neurons and neural populations process sensory information depending on cell type and brain state. Looking ahead, I’m more excited than ever to work on scientific questions related to the brain. In my next project, I will continue collaborating with my PhD supervisor, Philipp Berens, as well as Katrin Franke and Andreas Tolias at Stanford University." Lisa joined the Data Science group at the University of Tuebingen in 2019, and is now also part of the newly established Hertie Institute for AI in Brain Health. Her academic journey began with a bachelor’s degree at the Free University of Berlin, including a thesis project in biotechnology at the University of Birmingham, followed by a master’s in neuroscience from the University of Oldenburg, where she focused on computational modeling. During her PhD, Lisa also had the unique opportunity to teach a master’s course in statistics at the medical research center in Gabon, Africa. Our Institute and the Center for Rhetorical Science Communication Research on Artificial Intelligence (RHET AI Center), which is part of the University of Tübingen, kicked-off a 3-day interdisciplinary symposium today, focussing on the foundations, functions, and communicative implications of generative AI. The symposium is titled "Persuasive Algorithms". Scientists at our MPI-IS in Stuttgart published a paper in Science Advances where they present a novel method for deploying several magnetic miniature robots which can easily navigate through a 3D matrix resembling a network of blood vessels.
