Bridging Pharmacy &amp; Mathematics | The Graduate Research Training Program PharMetrX: Pharmacometrics &amp; Computational Disease Modelling is a joint initiative between the Freie Universität Berlin and the Universität Potsdam, bridging pharmacy and mathematics, supported by the research-driven pharmaceutical companies. As a transdisciplinary structured Graduate Research Training Program, PharMetrX offers PhD candidates a unique opportunity to experience research in the areas of drug development and optimising drug therapy jointly within academia and industry. The PhD program focuses on a broad spectrum of theoretical methods at the interface of pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, disease modelling, systems biology, scientific computing and mathematical modelling.

How can we integrate multi-source knowledge to better understand the complex metabolism of #voriconazole , essential in the treatment of fungal infections? In their recent publication, #PharMetrX Research+ student Ayatallah Saleh et al. developed a middle-out #PBPK model describing voriconazole and multiple metabolites as well as their complex metabolic interactions through autoinhibition of #CYP enzymes. By integrating knowledge from in-vitro experiments, literature and clinical data, they set up a framework that can be extended to design further in-vitro experiments and ultimately allowing paediatric extrapolation. Last week we started off our summer curriculum with the #PharMetrX A3 module! The PharMetrX student year of 2024 enjoyed a full week of lectures, hands-on sessions and lively discussions on the theory and practice of nonlinear mixed-effects modelling. During our traditional PhD discussion forum, the students got to share and discuss their science and projects, while enjoying some well-deserved pizza. As a highlight of this year’s A3 module, we got to enjoy the guest talk on “Predict, Revise, Repeat: The Use of Mathematical Modeling in Translational Medicine” by Jan Schlender ( Novartis ) - many thanks for the insights and discussions. Time to look back to an amazing #PAGE meeting last week in beautiful #Rome – we’re so excited to see that our #pharmacometrics community is growing further every year! We enjoyed many inspiring discussions during the #poster sessions with exciting contributions by #PharMetrX . As every year, the scientific talks and tutorials sparked many new ideas and insights, ranging over topics as broad as AI in pharmacometrics, integration of real-world data and the use of modelling for advancing new therapeutic modalities. We are beyond proud of all the excellent poster presentations by our #PharMetrX students and in particular the great oral presentation by Davide Bindellini on a quantitative framework to inform cortisol replacement therapy. We are more than happy to take these experiences, the scientific discussions and the catching up with old and new friends back home and can’t wait to meeting you again next year!

While the morning of the #PharMetrX Symposium is always dedicated to scientific exchange and discussion, the afternoon came with a different format: Together with our former PharMetrX Research+ Student Johanna Melin ( AstraZeneca ), we discussed about the broad topic of how to find the right position for you. Under Johanna’s great moderation, we exchanged about the whole way from clarifying our own interests and aims to successfully mastering job interviews. Many thanks, Johanna, for the amazing preparation and moderation, and to everybody for the lively discussion and exchange – it was an afternoon full of insights and inspiration for all of us and we are already looking forward to brainstorming about next year’s topic!

It’s time to look back to a highlight of our PharMetrX curriculum: The yearly #PharMetrX symposium took place in Berlin on 3 June. It is a great opportunity to meet and get to know our industry partners and it once again enabled a lot of scientific exchange and informal discussions, meeting familiar faces again and getting to know new ones. We are beyond proud of our #PharMetrX Research+ doctoral students Franz Weber , Ayatallah Saleh and David Outland for their impressive presentations on their projects, ranging from implementing #MIPD in clinical practice over modelling endothelial cell morphology to #PBPK modelling to elucidate complex metabolite kinetics. As always, we took a lot of inspiration and new insights out of this day and would like to thank everybody who contributed to making this day what it was - looking forward to seeing you next year!
