The traditional BayWa –Südstärke starch potato field day attracted 80 farmers this year – despite chilly weather and rain all day. Presentations this year focused on how to deal with the unusually wet growing conditions in 2024 – resistant potato varieties, effective plant protection schemes, erosion protection and adapted machinery and equipment. Special interest by farmers received a presentation about an EIP funded project for sustainable water management in agriculture, supported by Südstärke and farmtastic Consulting GmbH . During the first days of our production campaign, we invited kids from neighboring villages to our Schrobenhausen site. The kids could help sampling potatoes from the delivery trucks and performing the incoming quality checks, and watch unloading the trucks. They also extracted starch from potatoes in our lab and cocked their own chocolate pudding from scratch in our test kitchen. Like every year, Südstärke welcomed their new apprentices the first week of September. Three young men started as trainees in mechanical engineering and business management at the Schrobenhausen site. Our apprentices are exposed to our native starch production campaign from day one, and this year coincidentally it started the day. Südstärke is a proud contributor to vocational training at both of its sites. Training apprentices helps to ensure a sustainable skilled workforce and to create opportunities for the young generation in rural areas. #food #snacks #paper #potato #starch #potatostarch

We started our native starch production campaign 2024 in both sites September 2nd. We trust that potato yield and starch content will be better than 2023. The flood in Schrobenhausen end of June destroyed parts of the nursing home St. Georg Residents had to be rescued from the rising waters in the middle of the night under dramatic circumstances. The residents - including former employees and relatives of current Südstärke staff - want to return to their home as soon as possible. End of June we held our annual General Assembly of the Südstärke potato growers’ cooperative. Members received an update on the cooperative’s performance in 2023, confirmed all statutory agenda items and elected members of the managing board and the supervisory board. In a separate session, Management gave an update on the status of the Südstärke business in 2023 and the ongoing challenges in 2024. After two years of bad potato yields due to drought and high temperatures, this potato season began more promising. However, the flood that hit Bavaria end of May also flooded more than 10 % of the contracted growing area, farmers reported. #food #snacks #paper #potato #starch #potatostarch

At the invitation by our local MP Andreas Mehltretter a group of Südstärke apprentices visited the German Federal Parliament (Bundestag) in Berlin. Finally, we could witness the first green of sprouting starch potatoes also on black soil fields this week. Südstärke growers work with various soil environments – sandy, clayey, stony and swampy. They need different varieties of starch potatoes, equipment and agricultural methods to achieve good starch yields depending on soil and climate. Traditionally, starch potatoes are planted late on the black soil area because this region close to Schrobenhausen is also notorious for late frost periods. Last week we held our annual works assembly at the Schrobenhausen site. After 47 years of service for Südstärke we had to bid farewell to Dagmar Dörfler from R&D, after almost 40 years to Georg Reisner from Shipping. We thanked them for their long-standing commitment to Südstärke and wish them all the best for their retirement! We could as well celebrate the 25th company anniversary of Thomas Hoier who is in charge of the spare parts warehouse. And we are super proud of our now ex-apprentices who finished their training successfully: Antonia Oberhauser, Markus Berger-Klement and Fabian Schleibinger in precision machining, and Ahment Sulemanoski in electronics.
