Taxfix GmbH is a German financial technology (fintech) company that aims to simplify tax filing systems and make tax declarations accessible for everyone. It was founded in September 2016 by Mathis Büchi and Lino Teuteberg in Berlin. The company offers a software-based solution through a smartphone app and web browser, allowing users to submit income tax returns without manually filling out forms. The solution is based on rule-based artificial intelligence technology and is available in German and English. Taxfix enables tax declarations for the years 2015 to 2018 and primarily targets employees and workers residing in Germany. The company is backed by investors such as Valar Ventures, Creandum, and Redalpine.

The last few weeks have been quite eventful here at Taxfix and we’re excited to share a few highlights with you! 🥳

We had the pleasure of hosting our annual hackathon and had the amazing opportunity to unite the brightest minds in tech for a week full of innovation. 👩🏻💻👩🏾💻🧑🏼💻🧑🏿💻

Across global representation of our teams we had: 150+ team members attend and 11 cohorts present, all with 1 goal in mind; to make the world of taxes easier for our customers and improve their financial wellbeing. Those cohorts spent 48 hours focusing on how we can leverage the power of AI effectively for our customers. 🤖

Thank you to Nita Roberts for being such an amazing host and facilitating the presentations! We also want to shout out all of our incredible teams who participated and supported the hackathon. 💚

Summer-Partying like the 80's 🌟🕺

At Taxfix, fostering a strong sense of unity and cross-functional collaboration is key to our success. 

Our recent summer party in Berlin was the perfect embodiment of these principles. Our incredible teams from Italy, Spain & Argentina joined our team in our Berlin HQ for a full week of on-sites and fun team bonding activities and collaboration!

This year’s Miami Vice theme took us back to the 80’s 🕺. It was so much fun seeing our teams get inventive with mullet wigs, Hawaiian shirts and plenty of crimped hair to go around – such a diverse expression of our bold creativity and community spirit 🤩. 

We spent the day at Teufelsberg: an old spy tower made from the rubble of WWII; also known as ‘Devil’s Mountain’, this industrial site is now an interactive street art gallery, embodying the true spirit of Berlin. 🐻The day included some of the history buffs in our team taking advantage of a guided tour of the facility. 

To round out the day we had a special concert from our very own band- the Tax Pistols 🎸, along with a variety of delicious Latin-American-inspired food, ending with some serious moves on the dance floor. 💃🎶

We're incredibly lucky to have such wonderful colleagues who are not only talented and hardworking, but also fun-loving and supportive! 👥🤗

🇩🇪 Unveiling the Lives of Typical German Taxpayers: Insights from Taxfix Study 📊

Curious to find out who the people in Germany are that pay taxes? A recent Taxfix study* delves into the attributes and values of typical German taxpayers, unveiling intriguing discoveries.

👪 Family Over Career: Among the respondents, 63% are married or in a partnership, 42% are without children. Remarkably, 69% prioritize family over career, highlighting the importance of strong personal connections.

🔍 Facing Fears: Losing loved ones (54%) is the primary fear, echoing the importance of relationships. Furthermore, 45% express worries about old-age poverty, while 28% are concerned about financial dependence.

💰 Work & Income Insights: 47% are in full-time employment. The income landscape is diverse, with around 30% earning up to 25,000 euros, one-third making up to 50,000 euros, and 29% earning over 50,000 euros gross per year.

📱 Banking Apps outperform WhatsApp & Co.: In the digital realm, social media apps (52%), banking apps (46%), and communications apps (43%) are the front-runners in usage. 

🏦 Traditional saving behavior: A notable 71% opt to save money in a checking account, while 29% lean towards profitable investments. Remarkably, 56% are proactively securing their financial stability in old age, relying less on state support.

💰 Navigating Taxes: In 2023, the average household is projected to have an income burden ratio of 52.7%, as per the German Taxpayers' Association (Bund der Steuerzahler e.V.). This means that only 47.3 cents of every euro earned will be retained. However, there is a silver lining: the opportunity to reclaim overpaid taxes through the tax return. Though navigating the intricacies of tax returns might appear daunting for many (75%), the potential rewards are substantial, with an average refund of 1,095 euros.

Gender equality should stay one people’s radar all year long, not only during #WomensHistoryMonth! 

Therefore, we at Taxfix want to raise awareness for two topics that have a crucial impact on the lives of women everywhere: The #genderdigitaldivide and the #gendertaxgap! 

👉 According to a survey by Hans-Böckler-Stiftung, the gender digital divide holds the danger of expanding gender inequality in the labour market during the digital transformation.

Only 34% of women consider themselves well-prepared for networked digital technologies! 

The German Economic Institute has recently shown that the low proportion of women in tech is one of the main causes for the shortage of skilled workers in this sector and can be detrimental for innovation and growth in the German economy. 

👉 At the same time there is a gender tax gap: 37% of women have never filed a tax return compared to 24% of the men according to our studies. 

This lack of experience raises the barrier for women to achieve financial wellbeing and take financial matters into their own hands.

We aim to break down this barrier and have been working hard to enable women to increase their financial literacy through easy access to digital tax solutions. 

Let us fight together against gender inequality by enabling everyone to increase their financial and digital know-how – all year long!

We are thrilled that according to a recent study by @GISMA Business School, the hourly wages for working students at Taxfix are ranked #1 compared to other German start-ups. 💸

It’s no secret that companies today face the “great resignation” – a term used to refer to the fact that, during the pandemic, employees in many sectors (including tech) realized that they are not satisfied with their jobs. Employee satisfaction and wellbeing is and always has been a top priority for us at Taxfix. 

By employing students we at Taxfix gain the opportunity to enrich our own team with fresh perspectives and have the chance of finding new talents. On the other hand, we can provide the students with a unique opportunity to look into the daily work of one of the leading fintechs in Germany, to gain first working experiences, and to learn from our colleagues.
