I am excited to share our latest publication, for which we combined experimental quantum optics and high-performance computing. Thanks to our colleagues from the Paderborn Center for Parallel Computing , especially Robert Schade , we developed a scalable quantum detector tomography solver. 🖥️ This solver can reconstruct one hundred million matrix elements based on our experimental data set to characterize our large scale quantum photonic detector. With the announcement of the AMD EPYC 5th Gen. “Turin” processors, we are particularly pleased to announce that the new supercomputer at Paderborn Center for Parallel Computing will be equipped with this cutting-edge technology. The system provided by Lenovo and pro-com DATENSYSTEME GmbH will be one of the first in Germany to use the AMD Turin architecture and will be delivered to Universität Paderborn - Paderborn University in late November/early December. 💡 Technical highlights: - Lenovo ThinkSystem SD655 V3 HPC system with direct liquid cooling - 1,466 AMD EPYC Turin CPUs with 96 cores (over 140,000 cores in total!) - 611 TB RAM - 108 NVIDIA H100 GPUs - 435 NVMe storage + 5.4 PB HDD storage The new AMD EPYC processors efficiently increase performance while reducing space and power requirements, freeing up valuable resources for new or expanded workloads. From 2025, a large part of the supercomputer will be available for use in the National High Performance Computing (NHR) alliance and will support cutting-edge research throughout Germany, including in atomistic simulations. The system is designed to run for at least 5 years. Preparations for the system are already underway, and the unit for hot water cooling has already been installed. The NHR Graduate School funds doctoral scholarships in the field of High-Performance Computing. We are looking for interested candidates who will complete their Master's degree by the end of 2024 and are interested in pursuing a PhD at the intersection of innovative computer architecture (especially FPGAs and GPUs) and applications in scientific computing. Example topics can be found on the NHR Graduate School website. But we are also open to other topics in the scientific focus areas of my research group at Paderborn University and the Paderborn Center for Parallel Computing

Our PhD student Lennart Van Hirtum has released the first version of the compiler for the SUS Hardware Description Language. The goal of this language is to raise the abstraction level of hardware design with a special focus on highly pipelined, high throughput designs. At the same time, the language keeps the developer in control by explicitly not following a high-level synthesis approach.
