As 2024 unfolds, the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) conversation is set to undergo significant changes as sustainability continues to weave its threads more deeply into everyday business practices. But why does adopting ESG principles seem to be a slower process in the startup space? Inherently agile and disruptive startups are ideally positioned to revolutionize prevailing norms - from reshaping workplace cultures and lifestyles to innovating across product categories, production methods, and overall business operations. This freedom to operate should inherently be paired with a commitment to cultivating businesses that are not only thoughtful and fair but also inclusive and environmentally mindful.

At Founderment, we fully recognize ESG's complexities - the language, legal framework, guidelines, and guardrails that must be followed to adhere to this. Let's be honest: we struggle with all this ourselves, but as early-stage investors, we believe it's imperative to push ESG thinking onto the radar of our startups, and one of the best ways to do so is to foster an active dialogue around these crucial topics with and among founders. 

At our recent founders gathering, we explored ESG's role in early-stage startups and gained valuable insights. Our discussions went beyond viewing ESG merely as a matter of compliance. Instead, we focused on harnessing the compliance aspects of ESG as a stepping stone to reinforce a company's core strengths. This approach has been effectively implemented and exemplified by our portfolio company, Sentispec.
