When Edgar Maldonado was ushered out of the military on a medical discharge, it was a gut punch. He signed up right after 9/11, did two deployments to Afghanistan, and expected to leave on his own terms. But not now. "I did not know what to do because my sense of purpose was taken away from me," Maldonado told Catalyst. "I put so much emphasis and so much stock into being the person that was the protector, the server. You're taking that away from me. What is my purpose? And I didn't know how to process that." Searching for purpose, he enrolled in college. Then something happened. Maldonado got a second chance to be the protector, the server, by helping vets get back into the civilian job-seeking swing. And that changed his life — again. "Everything changed when I stopped thinking about my needs and started thinking about others' needs," he says. There's much more to his story. Born to Guatemalan parents, she navigated the challenges of being a first-gen college student. Now, as coordinator of APSU's Latino Community Resource Center, she's a beacon of support for others.
