Fentanyl is one of the leading causes of death in the United States. Dr. Guido Verbeck is making strides to change that. He has developed a first-of-its-kind drug-detecting drone that would help law enforcement identify fentanyl safely and efficiently. He has spent over a decade creating innovative solutions to detect harmful chemicals in the air, helping to protect communities and improve public health. “This is the kind of research that has the potential to save lives. At Augusta University, our #researchers are at the forefront of shaping the future through their groundbreaking work. In this spotlight, we’re excited to introduce Dr. Craig Albert , Professor of Political Science, Graduate Director, MA in Intelligence and PhD in Intelligence, Defense, and Cybersecurity Policy, Department of Social Sciences, Pamplin College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. #MeetTheResearchers 1. Can you share a bit about the research and work you do? - I have several lines of research. The first is about how/why different groups, from nation-states to terrorist organizations, conduct information warfare against the United States and, importantly, how the US can fight back against these types of operations while maintaining democratic norms and practices. With colleagues from The School of Computer and Cyber Sciences, on a grant sponsored by the Office of Naval Research, we investigate Arabic propaganda activities on social media originating from the Middle East and targeting the US' socio-political landscape. We create new LLMs and other computing processes to find these operations and then create policy to help secure the US from such threats. - Additionally, I work in publishing in the military/policy arena on how to shape #USpolicy to combat informational and cyber threats. Much of this has to do with how the US can respond aggressively to these threats without harming the democratic values our society cherishes. With colleagues from the MAISS program, we also have quite a research line that looks at how #AI affects international security, ranging from great power competition to how AI influences information warfare and the global governance of AI. - I also research #publichealth intelligence and publish on non-traditional national security threats within PHI, including COVID-19, and recently, in a paper now under review, on the threat of fentanyl to US #nationalsecurity and how PHI may help decrease that threat. - Finally, my last two areas of research are SoTL and ethnic conflict. Right now, I am working with my colleagues at AUO, writing about how we can bring to life through games/simulations asynchronous security studies courses and increase student engagement to be either on par with or even higher than traditional face-to-face courses. Additionally, we are creating activities in intelligence analysis that mimic what actually happens in the intelligence community, but we are adapting it to the asynchronous environment! Finally, for ethnic conflict, I continue to work toward a general theory of ethnic conflict, which I believe is rooted in ontological identity threats and collective historical memory. Here, I really focus on the Russo-Chechen wars. (continued in the comments)

Congratulations to Dr. Natalie Lane, recipient of the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University 's Lifetime Achievement Award! 🏆 Since 2005, Dr. Lane has been a dedicated leader as director of the Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship, associate professor in Pediatrics and professor in Emergency Medicine at the Children's Hospital of Georgia . She also serves as the service chief for the hospital's busy emergency department, treating 30,000 patients annually. “I gain a lot from watching young learners move forward. I think every person comes with different talents and different passions. As a fellowship director, I’m not holding hands, particularly of medical students or dictating what a resident does. We’re taking on adults who have chosen an extra three years in their development to become very specialized.
