Día de los Muertos at Austin Seminary! This week's chapel service celebrated Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), a time that holds space for both the sorrow of grief in memory of departed loved ones, as well as for the playfulness, color, and vibrancy in honoring death and in celebrating the fullness of life. The lovely and intricate face paintings of those assisting in worship were done in-house by our very own Sarah Gomez, Director of Auxiliary Enterprises! About Día de los Muertos The Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) tradition extends throughout Latin America, but is most closely identified with Mexico. The native peoples believed that upon death, the individual's soul did not die, and that they continued to live on in Mictlan, a place of rest. In time, this pre-Hispanic celebration merged with the Catholic celebration of All Soul's Day, and has evolved into the present-day Día de los Muertos celebration. As part of the tradition, altars called ofrendas ("offerings"), decorated with traditional offerings and other personal objects and mementos, are set up in homes to welcome home the souls of the dead and as a remembrance of the departed and an expression of love towards life. The ofrenda from this week's worship service will be displayed through this Friday in the Vickery Atrium of the McCord Community Center.

Heyer Jr., professor emeritus of the history of Doctrine, for his 30 years as a valued member of the Austin Seminary Faculty.
