Every day someone asks Hany Farid, a UC Berkeley professor in the UC Berkeley School of Information , to review images, audio and videos to determine if they are real or fake. As one of the world’s leading experts on digital manipulation and misinformation, his views and verification skills are in high demand. With elections being held around the globe this year, including the presidential election in the United States, he’s been especially busy using digital forensic tools to verify or debunk political misinformation as it spreads in real time, but the rapid advances of AI have only complicated his job. Can enzymes create complex molecules from “scratch?" In a study published by Nature Chemistry, a team of UC Berkeley researchers at the College of Chemistry led by Wenjun Zhang, Ph.D., reported the discovery of the first natural enzyme capable of creating these complex molecules — azides — from simpler ones. Azide is a useful chemical group that has many applications in fields like materials science, chemistry, drug discovery, and biology. One of its key uses is in a reaction called the azide-alkyne click reaction, a widely recognized reaction that has enabled many innovations in biology. Thanks to a $15 million grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) , UC Berkeley, in conjunction with partners at other public universities, aims to bridge the “valley of death” between academia and entrepreneurship. The grant will fund regional trainings and new instructors as well as program expansion and outreach through affiliates, helping broaden the hub’s overall impact. UC Berkeley will serve as the lead institution for the newly organized NSF Northwest Region Innovation Corps Hub, which includes University of California, Davis , UC Irvine , University of California, San Francisco , University of California, Santa Cruz , Oregon State University , University of Alaska Fairbanks and the University of Washington . Chancellor Lyons noted that as the world’s top producer of venture capital-funded startups founded by undergraduate alumni, Berkeley is perfectly poised for this role. The ultimate goal, said Shrader, is to unlock the commercial potential of research.
