John Scritchfield is the creative director for Calvin Theatre Company. But his journey to Calvin was anything but direct—originally training for pastoral ministry, he discovered a deep passion for theatre. Following God's lead, John took a nontraditional path, developing skills he now sees as perfect for his role. “It wasn’t until I came here that I realized all those pastoral skills I learned in my undergrad were directly applicable to this role. The common thread amongst many faculty members here is there’s a pastoral component to teaching." At Calvin, Scritchfield is focused on creating an environment in the theatre program where everyone is welcome; where community is valued. As a first-generation college student, Emma Fankhauser thought the military was her only path to college. When she first transferred into Calvin, she felt out of place—until she joined the TRIO program. There, she found a supportive community that helped her thrive. "It just took feeling that first person believe in me,” said Fankhauser. “There are several people, great people at Calvin who believe in you, it’s just a matter of being known and letting them in. Once I let that first person in, it was kind of this tunnel effect." Now, as a senior and office coordinator for Student Success, Emma is paying it forward, helping others feel at home at Calvin. When Elizabeth Paredez was entering her junior year of college, the university she was attending was experiencing a lot of change, which prompted the nursing major to reconsider her next step. “I want to live out a career that’s pleasing to God and blesses people and uses certain skills for His glory, so my faith is a huge priority,” said Paredez. “I think Calvin really emphasizes this. Reverend Stephen Tong will be the recipient of the 2025 Kuyper Prize, which is awarded by Calvin University and Calvin Theological Seminary.
