We recently hosted our second annual #ChamplainCollege Women in Cyber Summit, an inspiring event focused on advancing women in cybersecurity careers. With over 160 attendees, the day began with insights from Champlain alumni Mackenzie Marsocci ’20, Emily Platz ’20, and Samantha Moench ’17, who shared their experiences navigating gender dynamics in the industry. Keynote speaker Lynn Dohm, Executive Director of Women in CyberSecurity (WiCyS) , captivated us with her message on the potential for growth in cybersecurity, a field expected to expand by 32% in the next decade. Attendees also heard from leaders at the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) , the Center for Internet Security , and Vermont Attorney General Charity Clark, who emphasized the critical role of cybersecurity in today’s world. This event reaffirms our mission to support and inspire the next generation of women in cybersecurity. Pair undergraduate research with technology for good, cultural exploration, and a digital humanities mindset, and you've got the perfect summer internship for Champlain Computer Science & Innovation major Kim Benson ’27. 💻 ✅ Kim interned with the SOCKS program, funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) . Their research, “The Integration of Māori Knowledge Into Environmental Governance,” focused on how New Zealand’s environmental policies have evolved as indigenous Māori leaders gained greater representation in government. 🌿🌏 “The appeal of SOCKS was using skills that you learn for computer science for good, because that's why I love computer science—like any science, it can be used to help the world,” says Kim. Kim’s work exemplifies the intersection of technology, culture, and critical thinking that is core to Champlain’s new Digital Humanities major. This interdisciplinary program will prepare students to tackle global issues with creativity and technical expertise.
