The School of Engineering offers 5 undergraduate programs that can be taken as a full-time cadet or a transfer student in a traditional college/civilian setting during the afternoon and evening.

Today I can officially announce that, for the very first time in history, we have a canonical Hamiltonian formulation of the Navier-Stokes problem, one of the most famous unsolved problems in mathematics. The work has passed peer-review and the full-text article is available, free-of-charge, through the Journal of Fluid Mechanics at the following link:

Previously, such a formulation was believed to be mathematically impossible. Clark B. Millikan (son of Robert A. Millikan, of oil drop experiment fame) even published a paper on the topic, stating in part:

"It is impossible to derive the equations of steady motion of a viscous, incompressible fluid from a variation principle involving as Lagrangian function an expression in the velocity components and their first-order space derivatives, unless conditions are imposed on these velocity components such that all of the terms v*u2, w*u3, w*v3, u*v1, u*w1, v*w2 disappear from their positions in the Navier-Stokes equations" (Millikan, "On the steady motion of viscous, incompressible fluids; with particular reference to a variation principle," Lond. Edinb. Dubl. Phil. Mag. J. Sci. 7 (44), pp. 641-662, 1929).

Millikan wasn't wrong. It is impossible to derive the Navier-Stokes equations--in their usual form--that way. Nevertheless, my coauthors and I managed to get around that difficulty by considering a higher-order version of the problem. The end result is *mathematically equivalent* to what Millikan showed to be impossible. In short, it isn't quite as impossible as we thought it was.

This new formulation effectively simplifies the Navier-Stokes problem by reducing it to the search for a single scalar functional. If that functional can be shown to exist, with certain caveats, that will solve the Navier-Stokes problem. To be sure, doing that won't be easy, but it presents new and exciting opportunities that haven't been explored before. My colleagues and I intend to take up that challenge, and we hope that others will join us.

The result is also exciting because it shows that what we think is "impossible" isn't always so cut and dry, even in a field like mathematics.

Our sophomores in ELEC 204 Electrical Laboratory I completed the “First-Order Circuits” experiment in our Electronics Laboratory. In this lab, our students construct, measure, and capture the behavior of resistive-and-capacitive (RC) circuits. Such circuits are used to keep DC voltages steady while they are converted from AC, or to select frequencies to transmit/receive as part of a radio or cell-phone system.
