Clarkson University is partnering with semiconductor industry executives to launch a new one-credit seminar course, Introduction to Semiconductors, during the Spring 2025 Semester. The class will engage learners through weekly guest speakers on current trends such as AI, hyperscalers, advanced manufacturing, geo-political considerations, and the impact that semiconductors are having on diverse industries, including computing, consumer electronics, automotive, and aerospace. This Veterans Day, a new museum curated by Hank Okraski '58 will open as a tribute to the Naval Training Device Center (NTDC) at Port Washington (Sands Point), NY. Okraski, who spent his entire career in flight simulation, has been working tirelessly to curate the museum. The museum’s opening on Veterans Day culminates a long but successful journey in paying tribute to the dedicated and talented men and women who worked at Sands Point in developing tools for effective training, giving our military an edge in combat and strength in preserving the peace, Hank said. Clarkson University Assistant Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry Xiaocun Lu has been awarded a nearly $1.8 million National Institutes of Health Maximizing Investigators' Research Award (NIH-MIRA) grant to support his pioneering research in biomechanics sensing and imaging. The frequency and severity of Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) has been on the rise in New York State, and experts expect this trend to continue. Warmer water temperatures due to climate change coupled with nutrient pollution from agricultural runoff, wastewater, and stormwater, have created favorable conditions for these blooms, which can be harmful to both humans and animals. A team of researchers at Clarkson University is looking to combat HABs and recently conducted a successful field test of its innovative process called electrochemical ozonation. This process has been scaled up to a pilot-scale boat-mounted reactor with a treatment capacity of approximately 500 m³/day and is capable of inactivating harmful algae and destroying cyanotoxins within minutes. Demonstrations of this system have been successfully conducted in Lake Neatahwanta and Oneida Lake in New York State. Read more: https://lnkd.in/eEjRCwJZ

Last week, Clarkson CEM Program students went on a field trip to the I-495/I-90 Interchange improvements in Massachusetts for The Moles Students Day! The tour of the MassDOT I-495 & I-90 Design Build Project included approximately eight (8) stops along the active highway, including a tour of the MassDOT materials lab.

⁠ Meet Ronald Vasquez '26, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering double major.⁠ ⁠ He has had a year filled with professional experience -Tesla, Northrop Grumman, and GE Aerospace! ⁠ ⁠ This fall he is doing a Co-Op in California at Tesla, as a Materials Manufacturing Engineering Intern. ⁠ ⁠ "At Tesla, I'm working on designing and improving coatings manufacturing processes for the Model S/3/X/Y production lines, as well as new upcoming Tesla projects!"⁠ ⁠ This summer he had the opportunity to be in Baltimore, MD at Northrop Grumman as a Mechanical Design Engineer Intern.⁠ ⁠ "While at Northrop, I Supported the Airborne Surveillance Hardware team through Mechanical design and testing!"⁠ ⁠ In the spring he was a Cost Design Engineer Intern with GE Aerospace, in Boston, MA! ⁠ ⁠ "At GE Aerospace, I led Design Changes, Cost analysis, and RCAs on combustion and structural components across various engine lines!"⁠ ⁠ Ronald might be doing a little more than the average Clarkson University student but he is certainly not alone in being ready for the workforce! ⁠ ⁠ "Clarkson University has given me the technical foundation and problem-solving mindset necessary for these high-impact roles. The coursework in both mechanical and aerospace engineering, along with opportunities to work on real-world projects, helped me build the skills I’ve used to succeed in these internships."
