As a medical student shadowing art therapists and palliative care physicians, Dr. Ian Kwok was inspired by their interactions with the most vulnerable patients and their families. "All of them radiated kindness, even in the face of the most difficult situations you can imagine, and they were so good at working collaboratively on care teams," says Dr. Kwok, now a palliative care physician at Weill Cornell Medicine and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital . As director of community outreach and education for geriatrics and palliative care, Dr. Kwok aims to bring together the scientific and human sides of medicine to improve patient care. He strongly advocates using creative arts therapy as a tool for patients facing serious illness. "So much of medicine is verbal and linguistic," he says. "For patients who have difficulty speaking or have auditory impairments, or when there is information that is emotionally difficult to process, art is a way to bypass those barriers." Through art and music, patients can reflect on what is important to them, express their experiences and communicate their needs. Dr. Kwok understands art's power. The son of a physicist and family medicine doctor and an accomplished painter, Dr. Kwok grew up in Toronto with an appreciation for science and the arts. He is also an artist and was drawn to New York City's thriving arts scene when he arrived as a college student. Before medical school, he worked for a medical software startup and as a professional arts photographer. He entered medical school thinking he would become a family medicine doctor like his mother until he crossed paths with art therapy and palliative care. "They are both the epitome of humanism in medicine," he says. "When people are faced with challenges, what people choose to prioritize is deeply human. It's special to see that every day." In addition to providing care, Dr. Kwok is committed to research and studies the use of creative arts therapy for socialization among older adults and the use of AI to help transcribe medical discussions between patients, families and clinicians.

A new study led by Weill Cornell Medicine 's Dr. Moustafa Gabr demonstrates a way to virtually screen millions of compounds to find small molecule drug candidates that target cancer checkpoints and allow the immune system to launch a fight against cancer. Checkpoint inhibitors are a type of immunotherapy that treats cancer by releasing the brakes on immune cells, so they are unleashed to attack cancer cells. All approved checkpoint inhibitors are large, lab-made proteins called monoclonal antibodies that must be infused into the bloodstream. They block the binding of checkpoint proteins with their partner proteins, preventing the "off" signal that stops immune T cells from being activated. Small molecules have an advantage because they are generally orally bioavailable, allowing for easier administration, tailored dosing, and improved patient compliance. Our researchers have received a grant to build a portable, high-resolution Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scanner to detect the earliest stages of Alzheimer’s disease. “We can move it to medical centers that might not have advanced brain imaging, enabling us to provide the highest-level care to more diverse populations,” said Dr. Amir H. Goldan of Weill Cornell Medicine . Unlike current models, this PET scanner will be upright, so a patient can sit in a chair that travels with the unit, significantly improving portability and accessibility. Dr. Laura C. Pinheiro has been named a Cancer Moonshot Scholar by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) . The award, which carries a $3.2 million, seven-year R37 Merit grant, will support Dr. Pinheiro’s research program to investigate drivers of cancer health inequities and the role that social determinants of health play in cardiovascular outcomes in Black and white cancer survivors. Anna Palmieri, a 12-year-old from Bayside, NY, had been experiencing debilitating nighttime seizures caused by epilepsy since she was a baby. Her mother, Kristen, recalls, "The seizures came quick and fast as they sped to the hospital." Anna's parents had to monitor her constantly, making it impossible for her to enjoy activities like sleepovers and camping trips. However, thanks to the help of a team of doctors at Weill Cornell Medicine, Anna's seizures are now under control, and she can lead a normal life. When Anna's seizures started at just five months old, her parents rushed her to the hospital, where she was diagnosed with a common form of epilepsy called frontal lobe cortical dysplasia. Her seizures only occurred while she slept, so she was able to participate in school and extracurricular activities without interruption. However, her parents had to take turns staying up all night to make sure she didn't hurt herself during a seizure. Despite trying numerous medications, alternative treatments, and even a strict diet, Anna's seizures continued. When she was 11, her seizures worsened, and she was diagnosed with Todd's Paralysis, which caused numbness and fatigue after a seizure. Determined to find a solution, Anna's parents sought out a pediatric epilepsy specialist at Weill Cornell Medicine. The doctors there recommended surgery as a potential cure for Anna's condition. Although the idea of brain surgery was daunting, the doctors' confidence and expertise provided comfort to Anna's parents, who felt they were in good hands. After considering their options, Anna's family decided to proceed with the surgery, hoping it would finally provide a cure for their daughter's epilepsy. "For the first time in eleven years, I wasn't sleeping at her bedside," said her father, Marc. Today, thanks to Dr. Caitlin Hoffman and the pediatric epilepsy team at Weill Cornell Medicine , the Palmieri family can finally lead an everyday life filled with camping, slumber parties, and uneventful bedtimes.

Dr. Chani Traube has been awarded a $3.4 million grant, with the possibility of extending to a total of $17 million over five years, for a large-scale clinical trial called Optimizing Pain Treatment in Children on Mechanical ventilation (OPTICOM). The National Institutes of Health grant will fund a randomized clinical trial designed to determine if adding acetaminophen or ketorolac, together or separately, to opioid-based pain control reduces pain in children with acute respiratory failure. Dr. Traube of Weill Cornell Medicine and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital will lead the project with Dr. Michael Bell of Children's National Hospital and Dr. Richard Holubkov of University of Utah School of Medicine .
