Despite financial and other challenges, this first-generation College of the Sequoias alumnus, Ramon Flores earned an Associate of Science (AS) degree with a 3.77 grade point average (GPA), making the president’s list. After graduation, Flores opened a landscape business (Omipresent Landscaping, LLC) that supports his family and allows for a flexible work schedule. “I was 30 years old when I went back to college,” said Flores. “My advice is that it is never too late to get a college education. You can’t do it alone. When you face challenges, you have to seek out resources. Your professors can help you get where you need to be, if you ask for help.” “Fernando Fernandez was my main professor, and his hands-on teaching style really worked for me. We studied in the classroom, worked in the lab, and then practiced what we’d learned about plants in the campus landscaping. I appreciated how he always answered my questions and to this day, he is one of my mentors.” Fernandez recalls Flores as a dedicated student who had life experience under his belt and came back to college focused on his future. “As a re-entry student, new to the COS Ornamental Horticulture program, Ramon was very reserved at first,” said Fernandez. “It clicked when Ramon indicated that if I showed him how to do it, he would be able to do it." After graduating with an AS degree in Ornamental Horticulture/Landscape Management from COS in 2020, Flores balanced his time as a groundskeeper at a shopping center while building his business, Omnipresent Landscaping LLC. Now, Flores can focus full-time on his business and family (he is proudly watching his daughter pursue higher education at COS). After raising a family and a part-time career, Melissa Christensen enrolled in an ornamental horticulture class at College of the Sequoias when she was having problems growing plants in her garden. This sparked a passion that led to taking 13 ornamental horticulture classes, working at the campus nursery, and earning four certificates, as well as an Associate of Science Degree in Ornamental Horticulture. “The experience changed my life, my path and who I am today. One class was the springboard to so much more. And being a mature student didn’t make any difference. Everyone was friendly and welcoming.” Christensen credits her COS Ornamental Horticulture Instructor Fernando Fernandez with inspiring her. “There isn’t anybody better to learn about ornamental horticulture from than Mr. Fernandez,” said Christensen. “He’s magic; he is a truly supportive teacher and knows everyone in the industry. He loves what he does and prepares students for the outside world. COS is a leader in the nursery industry.” Equipped with what she learned at COS, Christensen is now an independent horticulture consultant. “I work as a ‘landscape coach,’ guiding clients on improving their turf grass, identifying and choosing plants, landscape and irrigation design, testing soils, and making plant recommendations. I love what I do so much and want to share what I’ve learned, while making money. I’d also like to work with underprivileged schools, introducing young people to growing plants and identifying insects.” Christensen believes COS changed her life for the better. “I will treasure my experience with COS for the rest of my life,” said Christensen. “I am grateful that COS gave me a new level of confidence and belief that anything is possible. You just have to have the fire in the belly to go after it. After attending the World Ag Expo and meeting staff and faculty from College of the Sequoias , Jonathan Hornung was intrigued that COS had an entire campus in Tulare dedicated to #agriculture , not just a few classes. "I was sold on the Career Technical Education (CTE) programs that COS offered and unique agriculture focus.” Despite living in Bakersfield, more than an hour’s drive away from the Tulare Campus, Hornung enrolled at COS and figured he'd give college a try for one semester. “The college’s welcoming environment and comprehensive agriculture program convinced me to continue taking classes. I kept going until I earned an Associate of Science (AS) in both Ag Business and Plant Science.” Hornung credits faculty with encouraging him to get involved in campus clubs. “My Ag Business Professor, Shannan Cooper , pushed me to go above and beyond,” said Hornung. “I volunteered during field days and community agriculture projects. She showed me that students have to take personal responsibility to learn more and get involved beyond the classroom to set themselves apart from their peers.” At a COS Entrée to Employment event, Hornung connected with James Nichols , with Nichols Farms , a fourth-generation family farm dedicated to providing the highest quality organic and conventional pistachios in the USA. “I wasn’t really looking to hire another intern when I met Jon,” said Nichols. “I was impressed with Jon’s maturity, politeness, and vision that he wanted a career in agriculture. We created an #intern position for Jon to work on a technology project.” The Nichols Farms internship changed Hornung’s career path. “After the first year, I became an employee and continued to work while going to school,” said Hornung. After graduating from COS, Hornung transferred to California State University Fresno. “It put me a little bit ahead of other students,” said Hornung. Nichols became president of the HotSpot AG ™, the technology startup founded out of Nichols Farms. “We modernize irrigation systems for remote monitoring and control,” said Nichols. “Jon has been a huge contributor to the team. I’m so glad we hired him as an intern seven years ago.” Hornung currently works as an Agriculture Technical Specialist for HotSpot AG™. “Working for a small company is exciting,” said Hornung. “I thrive in this environment, where I wear many hats and do something different every day.” Now Hornung has come full circle and attends COS campus events representing his employer, HotSpot AG™. Hornung advises students to "get out into the field by #volunteering and #interning to see what they like to do. No one is going to tell you what to do. Diana Zegarra , graduated from College of the Sequoias in 2019 with an Associate of Art for transfer in Math/Science. While she was in her last semester of Plant Science at California State University, Fresno, Zegarra heard about the COS Agriculture Irrigation Academy. “I decided to enroll in both colleges simultaneously and returned to COS to learn irrigation efficiency, pumps and design, and flesh out my skills,” said Zegarra. At COS, Zegarra attended industry presentations from representatives from Ground Water Sustainability Agencies (GSA), where she learned about (and developed a passion for) the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA). After earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Plant Science from Fresno State and completing the COS Irrigation Academy, Zegarra secured an internship with a GSA. “At age 23, I became an Engineering Technician with the Kaweah Delta Water Conservation District, primarily doing work with the Greater Kaweah GSA ,” she noted. Now serving as an Assistant Water Resources Engineer for Tulare Irrigation District , Zegarra thanks Charlie Abee for being an excellent instructor who turned theory into action. “COS is by far the best college to attend in the area,” Zegarra affirmed. She recommends the COS Ag Irrigation Academy to students. “I still stay in touch with Charlie Abee and other instructors. COS provided the hands-on experience that tied it all together.
