Blessings are not wages earned for our works, but gifts that keep giving day after day. Today, I received the blessing by those who attended our annual Danville Regional Medical Center/ Sovah Health - Danville Retirees Thanksgiving Luncheon. Each year, Danville Community College 's Office of Institutional Advancement & Development/ Danville Community College Educational Foundation invites the Danville Regional Medical Center/SOVAH Health - Danville Retirees to a Thanksgiving lunch to show our appreciation of the many years they spent working at our local hospital. I have often told this group...the staff and administration of SOVAH Health - Danville are standing on your shoulders and we thank you for your many, many years of service and to the betterment of our community! I also had the blessing of introducing two DCC groups to the retirees this afternoon. First, the Markering & Public Relations Staff, Faith O'Neil , Katherine Daniel Jones and Kathy Nguyen were introduced. Their designs, works-of-art, printed materials and online and social media publications are forward-facing, that is, viewed in the public first. They truly set the tone in our community on all marketing and public relations content for DCC! Second, a few members of the Registered Nursing Program, Jim Emerson, DNP, RN and Shelby Rigsby were also introduced. They shared an update on the nursing program's ACEN accreditation process and the current nursing program enrollment. It was great having both groups join us today. Being thankful often involves certain feelings and the way you express those feelings to the people in your life. Today was the perfect example of this sentiment. 🙏🙏🙏 Thank you, Angela Blankenship , Angela's Creative Catering and her staff for making our Danville Community College Educational Foundation events special! The traditional Thanksgiving lunch was amazing and so appreciated. Great job today! ...and one last thank you goes to Cheryl Hill for making the beautiful fall table arrangements and helping with the setup last night. Her commitment to the hundreds of donors, so many friends of the college and our community partners is unwavering!

It is only natural that many of us have a mixed bag of emotions this evening and really over the last 30 days since Dr. Wallace's announcement that he had accepted a new presidential role for WVU Potomac State College . Today, we put the exclamation point❗️on the FAREWELL Celebration given for Jerry Wallace, Ed.D. and Ace. Danville Community College faculty, staff, administrators, college and foundation board members and community leaders all joined in today's FAREWELL Celebration wishing Dr. Wallace and his family well. I provided the following sentiment today that is worth sharing again..."Dr. Wallace, twenty-nine months ago I had no idea where our journey would take us. While our time will be short-lived here at Danville Community College, we will forever be colleagues. Always remember, our successes far outweigh our failures. I truly believe you came to DCC at the right time for us and you are leaving for West Virginia at the right time for your family. No one can fault you for that. The unparalleled memories we share together will be remembered often. I am always a phone call or text message away. Thank you and good luck." While I was preparing my remarks, one word kept coming to mind...WELFARE. Why is this word so important now???? When you scramble the word FAREWELL, 99 different word variations can be formed. The only 7-letter word that can be spelled is WELFARE. The WELFARE, the social betterment, the cultural changes, the overall improvement, your personal happiness, your professional development, the well-being of others and a state of contentment are numerous examples of what defines Dr. Wallace's greatness. His support of others is unmatched at so many levels. The WELFARE of our college; The WELFARE of our collective boards; The WELFARE of our student body; The WELFARE of our faculty, staff and administration and The WELFARE of our college community is better today than it was 29 months ago. We owe Dr. Wallace and his family a tremendous level of gratitude for our WELFARE. Dr. Wallace...You, Allyson, Kennedy Marie and Baby Wallace will always have a key to the city, per Mayor Alonzo Jones , so return and return often. Great gesture Alonzo! Well played! The WELFARE of WVU Potomac State College is now in your hands, Dr. Wallace. Good luck, my friend. We will all be watching your successes ‼️

DCC Student Spotlight: Brooke Nuckols, Precision Machining Technology Brooke Nuckols, a dedicated Danville Community College student in the Precision Machining Technology (PMT) program, exemplifies passion, determination, and a commitment to excellence in her craft. Brooke, a Lynchburg, Virginia native, commutes an hour each way, three days a week, to attend classes at DCC. Her dedication to her education is evident as she works toward earning her diploma in Precision Machining, with an expected graduation date of May 2025. “I first heard about the PMT program from my brother, who graduated three years ago,” Brooke shared. “He had a great experience, and it inspired me to pursue this path. I knew DCC’s program would provide the hands-on training and support I needed to succeed.” Brooke’s journey into machining began much earlier than her arrival at DCC. Growing up in her father’s machine shop, she spent years watching him work with intricate tools and machines. Today is National Philanthropy Day. Philanthropy is the intentional decision made for the better good. While Philanthropy comes in many forms, the impact of being philanthropic will always have one universal theme - the desire to make an impactful difference. This thought brings me to my post today… Background: Per the Virginia Early Childhood Foundation , the Ready Region Southside has a total of 15,560 childcare slots available, however, there is still a need for an additional 5,336 slots to meet the current need in the Ready Region Southside. Specifically, there is a need for 810 additional childcare slots in the Danville/Pittsylvania County area. This lack of childcare availability has a significant impact on parents being able to work and also on Virginia businesses due to the diminished labor force available. In our community alone, this service gap equates to approximately $22 million in economic impact. While Danville Community College (DCC) consistently graduates highly trained Early Childhood Education (ECE) workers, this will not address the additional childcare slots needed in our college’s service region. In an effort to address this need, I believe additional childcare centers are needed. Call to Action: To meet this need, a partnership between the Danville Community College Educational Foundation (DCCEF), DCC's ECE program and area childcare centers has been created to enhance the entrepreneurial knowledge in students who are interested in opening their own childcare centers. This partnership would include DCC ECE students working with area childcare center owners to better understand the business side of owning a childcare center. In order to accomplish this goal, up to six students will be screened and identified after their fall semester to participate in this pilot program. Three area childcare centers have been identified as potential partners. The owners have been contacted and they have agreed to take part in this program I am calling N.A.P.T.I.M.E. - New Academic Partnerships for Training, Internships and Mentoring Entrepreneurs. In a childcare center, “naptime” is the time when teachers, directors and/or owners take the time to focus on the business side of the enterprise. In addition to the mentoring provided by the childcare owners, these students will also have the benefit of entrepreneurial training and coaching. This additional training will be provided by Lauren Small , Early Education Business Consultants. The coaching deliverable will consist of additional in-depth training in strategic planning, human resources, financial management and marketing. Philanthropy In Action: Match funding will be provided by the three employers, the DCCEF and a family trust managed by Atlantic Union Bank here in Danville. Over $100,000 will be spent on responding to this critical community need. Ironically, the Ready Region Southside Group is on our campus today and will be visiting the Helping Hands Child Development Center!

Today, we had the honor of attending the ground breaking ceremony for Microporous. This industry will be located at the Berry Hill Mega Site and will bring 2000 jobs to our region. The Danville Community College Workforce Division looks forward to supporting Microporous with their training and employment needs as they join Southside Virginia.
