The National Alumni Council (NAC) at Duke Divinity School is part of a strategic effort to connect the Divinity School to its alumni and the ministry networks in which they serve. Made up of 24 alumni from different graduating years, backgrounds, denominations, and ministry contexts, the council works to mentor current and prospective students, nurture alumni through continuing education and reunions, and together identify new sources of financial aid funding and field education opportunities. “The members of the National Alumni Council are key to ensuring that alumni insights and perspectives are heard within our community," said Minoka Yonts, director of alumni relations. Duke Divinity alumnus Bishop Connie Shelton shared how Duke Divinity School and she personally has been impacted by The Duke Endowment in the Annual Report. Duke University has received a $5 million award from The Duke Endowment to bolster the work of the Office of Black Church Studies at Duke Divinity School. The grant will be used to recruit and support a senior faculty member specializing in Black church studies. “The Black church knows social justice; it knows music; it knows preaching,” said dean Edgardo Colon-Emeric. “This award from The Duke Endowment will allow the Office of Black Church Studies to elevate its nationally prominent role as a leader in the study of Black church theological and spiritual study.” https://lnkd.in/e6E_qB5v

Rev. Dr. Louis Threatt, M.Div. ’11, spoke to the Duke Kenan Institue for Ethics about his work with Project TURN at Duke Divinity, discussing what he has learned and observed through his 15 years of studying, ministering, teaching, and helping others teach inside prisons. Said Threatt, "Inside these walls lies a rawness, an authenticity, and a vast hunger for learning that any professor appreciates. The students in prison…are in class ready and eager to learn. And once they build relationships — with the professor, with each other, and with the Duke students — the ‘turning’ starts to take place.
