Congratulations to MGA's Dr. Myungjae Kwak , Department of Computer Science chair and Peyton Anderson-endowed professor. He was awarded the IACIS 2024 Ben Bauman Award of Excellence at the 2024 International Association for Computer Information Systems (IACIS) Fall Conference. #AmazingFaculty The Ben Bauman Award for Excellence recognizes faculty excellence and service. Over the past few years, Kwak's research has focused on applying artificial intelligence and machine learning to programming education, IoT sensor networks, and biomedical informatics. He has secured significant grants, including a National Science Foundation grant for investigating fragmentation rules and improving metabolite identification. In addition, he has secured funding from Affordable Learning Georgia for textbook transformation projects.

Middle Georgia State University's School of Computing Professor Tina Ashford presented a History and Evolution of Cryptography lecture to the Cyberknights club. Students learned about the impact that ancient cryptography has on the importance of cryptography in cybersecurity. Students were also shown examples of the Jefferson Disk Cipher, the Confederate Code Disk Cipher, and a simple Enigma Cipher. The hands-on presentation was engaging for the students and an educational experience.

Fantastic turnout at the "Postcard Project," an event planned by an MGA sociology class to bring attention to the often-hidden issues of domestic violence and sexual assault. In partnership with the Crisis Line & Safe House of Central Georgia, Inc. and MGA’s Office of Title IX, students in Dr. Elaina Behounek ’s fall Social Problems class gathered in the lobby of the Student Life Center on the Macon Campus to write messages and create art on a series of postcards that will be displayed in a kind of mosaic. The Ben G. Porter Trust has awarded the MGA Foundation an unrestricted gift of $70,000 to help support scholarships and other initiatives. “We are honored to be part of Mr. Porter’s enduring impact on the community he loved,” said Nancy White, MGA’s vice president for University Advancement. “This gift will help the Foundation continue to address some of the University’s greatest needs by supporting scholarships, classroom and program enhancements, and quality academics." The School of Aviation is a unit of Middle Georgia State University, a University System of Georgia institution that came into being in 2013 with the consolidation of Middle Georgia College and Macon State College. Prior to consolidation, the aviation program resided with Middle Georgia College (MGC) — an institution with long, historical ties to aviation. In 1939, the United States Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) authorized Middle Georgia College to conduct pilot training. Basic ground and flight training was completed at MGC using local facilities. In 1941, the program was discontinued as a CAA function and was federalized as part of a nationwide War Department flight training effort. From 1941 to 1944, 517 aircrews for B-25 and B-29 bomber aircraft were trained by Middle Georgia College. #VeteransDay #WeMakePilots

MGA was the sponsor of the Friday, Oct. 18, high school football matchup in Cochran between the Bleckley County Royals and the Dublin Irish. As part of the pre-game activities, chief instructor Dylan McCoy landed a helicopter from the University's School of Aviation at midfield. Randy Thompson , a Bleckley County High grad who is now director of Campus & Community Engagement at MGA, delivered the game ball. Others representing MGA included Dr. Jennifer Brannon , vp of Student Affairs, Michael Brown director, Dr. Kassi Hill, nursing instructor, and, of course, our favorite mascot, Duke! #FridayNightLights

MGA & Macon+Bibb County are again co-hosting a Veterans Day ceremony at Coleman Hill in downtown Macon. The event, which is open to the public, is scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 11. In addition to honoring all veterans, participants will remember the sacrifices of those made by the 151st Machine Gun Battalion, 42nd Rainbow Division, members of which lost their lives during World War I. The ceremony takes place at the Coleman Hill monument established in memory of those battalion members. Coleman Hill Park is located at 285 Spring Street.
