🔍 New Research: Testing OpenAI's o1 Models for Journalism Tasks I've just published a detailed evaluation of OpenAI's new o1 "reasoning models" - examining their performance on real-world journalism tasks like data visualization and headline selection. Key findings: - The o1 models don't consistently outperform GPT-4o for journalism tasks - Chain-of-thought prompting greatly improves performance across all models - even with smaller, local LLMs - For data visualization tasks, GPT-4o with chain-of-thought prompting matches o1's capabilities at 1/6th the cost - In A/B headline testing, traditional models actually outperformed o1 Success with any LLM hinges more on thoughtful prompting and thorough evaluation than just raw capabilities, so finding the right tool for specific journalism tasks requires systematic, real-world testing. Case study: The Invisible Institute compiled a database of complaints against police officers and use of force reports in cities outside of Chicago across Illinois. The initial database has 7,000 records from the City of Champaign, Illinois and Urbana, Illinois and is geared toward both the public and journalists. The nonprofit worked with local journalists to both build the database and report stories based on the records obtained. This was modeled after work the group has done with public records regarding police in Chicago. Read their insights: https://lnkd.in/germPdih

Case study: Investigate West's data-driven reporting project started with a question about one judge who himself had been involved in some domestic violence situations.
