Santa Clara University is a private Jesuit university in Santa Clara, California. Established in 1851, it is the oldest operating institution of higher learning in California. The university offers bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees through its six colleges, and enrolls over 9,000 students. The campus is known for its Mission Revival architecture and Spanish Colonial Revival styles.

The College of Arts and Sciences at Santa Clara University offers degree programs in the arts, humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences, with interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary options. As the home of the Core Curriculum, the College serves roughly 5,300 undergraduate students, 2,900 of whom are students within the College. 

Made up of 27 departments and programs, the College offers 33 majors and 38 minors for undergraduate students and an M.A. in Pastoral Ministries for graduate students. It serves as the home of the Center for the Arts and Humanities, and offers programming through various initiatives like, the Sinatra Chair in the Performing Arts, the Digital Humanities Initiative, and the DeNardo Lectureship in the Health Sciences.  

Our award-winning faculty and student body consistently draw national attention receiving grants or scholarships from institutions such as the National Science Foundation, Fulbright Scholars Program, and the Rhodes Scholar Program. Opportunities for students to participate in undergraduate research projects, creative expression, and summer internships through our REAL program are available and encouraged.

“When I wasn’t busy, I felt like I was just falling behind,” says Saron Weldemariam '26 (Ethnic Studies & Sociology). Weldemariam was beginning to feel burnt out during her 1st year at Santa Clara University.

From connections made on an Ignatian Center immersion trip and through the LEAD Program, Weldemariam found a community which helped her shift her perspective and find a home away from home.

Nicolás Lell Benavides ’10 entered his undergraduate studies at Santa Clara University as a biology major, but he had always had an underlying passion for music. 

He followed that passion, changing his major to music. And from his studies with SCU music faculty, his passion developed into a career!

Benavides teamed up with fellow Bronco Hector Vega ’10 for one of many projects he has worked on—a 45-minute opera titled “Tres minutos” which delves into the emotional impact of the U.S.-Mexico border crisis.  Now, he's working on his largest project to date, the opera “Dolores,” commissioned by West Edge Opera, which centers on the life and activism of United Farmworkers co-founder Dolores Huerta.
