We're excited to share that our Vice Dean for Research, Kim Barrett, has been named the winner of the John Snow Public Health Innovation Prize 2024! The prize is part of the Applied Microbiology International (AMI) Horizon Awards. Horizon Awards celebrate the brightest minds in applied microbiology, the study of microorganisms and their use. The prize recognizes and supports excellence in this field and targets those whose work significantly improves public health and environmental sustainability. “I am thrilled to receive this recognition in honor of a pioneer in the field of public health. Due to my personal research interests, the award is especially meaningful. John Snow is renowned for his demonstration that a key diarrheal illness, cholera, is spread via contaminated water,” Barrett said. We're thrilled to share that three of our faculty are being recognized for their excellence in pediatric care and education by the Western Society for Pediatric Research (WSPR) and the Western Section of the American Federation for Medical Research! Daniah Beleford , assistant professor in the Department of Physiology and Membrane Biology and UC Davis MIND Institute faculty member was awarded the WSPR’s 2025 Abbott Nutrition Young Investigator Award. This award is given to a young faculty member performing outstanding research in the area of pediatrics. Satyan Lakshminrusimha , chair of the Department of Pediatrics and physician-in-chief of UC Davis Children’s Hospital, was awarded the 2025 WSPR Joseph W. St. Geme Jr. Education Award. This award is presented to recognize outstanding achievement in pediatric education and mentorship and is nominated by one’s peers and former mentees. Geoanna Marie Bautista , assistant professor in the Department of Pediatrics, was awarded the 2025 Western Section of the American Federation for Medical Research Young Investigator Award. Our students at the University of California, Davis - School of Medicine are always striving to improve the health of the community. On Saturday, the student-run Willow Clinic will host the 14th annual Veterans Day Health Fair. The event features medical care, haircuts, vaccines, social services, coats, winter survival supplies, food and more. The free, walk-in fair takes place at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 67, 2784 Stockton Blvd. “Everyone is welcome, especially people with housing insecurity because it’s one of the services we offer — helping people with housing,” said Morgan Murry, a second-year student at the UC Davis School of Medicine and Willow Clinic volunteer. This Veterans Day, UC Davis Health honors all veterans and military-connected communities and the valuable lessons we can all learn from their examples. We extend our deep appreciation to our own veterans and active-duty service members in our health system, and recognize the courage and sacrifice of everyone who serves to protect our nation. UC Davis Health is proud of its close partnerships with key Northern California military partners. These include the local Veterans Administration (VA) hospital, whom we are helping to support with research, medical expertise, and PPE; and the David Grant Medical Center on Travis Air Force Base, where we rotate surgeons and emergency medicine providers to learn from each other’s experience with trauma. In addition, we help to keep their doctors and nurses, who may be called upon in war, to maintain high acuity practical experience while they are stationed in Northern California.

Congratulations to Mindy Burley, Davis 7 Pediatric nurse and very deserving recipient of our Nurse Residency Star Preceptor Award here at UC Davis Health ! The nurse preceptor’s relationship with new graduate nurses is essential to their successful independent practice and socialization into the healthcare organization’s culture. Preceptorship bridges the gap between the classroom and the clinical area where nursing is practiced. The preceptor creates an environment conducive to learning while building competence and confidence in new nurses, key for safe patient care and nursing excellence. Thank you, Mindy, for making the transition to practice for our new graduate nurses a success! According to preceptee Clarice, "Mindy Burley is an incredible preceptor in all facets. Truly amazing annual #Friendsgiving event today at UC Davis Health hosted by Office for Health Equity, Diversity and Inclusion and the UC Davis Health Employee Resource Groups! This years Friendsgiving, an annual coming together to be in community and celebrate each other’s cultures, offered Tahitian and Polynesian dancers and theme of “Celebrating Hello” learning how to say hello in various cultures. The event was attended by over 175 people and had an amazing spread of Hawaiian, Tahitian, Polynesian foods prepared by Chef Santana Diaz and his amazing culinary team, executed by Terese Hollander . This event is truly a collaborative effort and I’m sure you’ll see many pictures over the next few days. Last month, we hosted the Rev PC Summit, which united healthcare experts and leaders to discuss declining primary care resources. We are proud to be a national leader in raising awareness about the declining state of primary care, which is affecting a growing number of patients. Factors include too little funding for primary care and outdated approaches to providing the funding, which harms primary care practices. The lack of funding leads to fewer physicians entering the field and others cutting back or leaving practice altogether. “The current state of primary care is bad and getting worse, nationally and in California,” Anthony Jerant, our chair of the Department of Family and Community Medicine, explained, “and this is undermining our health and health care.
