Eye surgeons, stem cell researchers, geneticists, infectious disease specialists and engineers are working on technologies and treatments for macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, corneal disease and cataracts as well as a vaccine to prevent eye and genital herpes infections. These efforts have vaulted UC Irvine School of Medicine into the top echelons of U.S. institutions receiving National Institutes of Health grants for vision research.

Suh, MD, FAAP, MBA, FACS , and collaborator James Hermsen whose 3D-printed Omni Glasses are transforming lives. UCI medical student and researcher Aidin Spina recently presented new data at AAO 2024, showcasing the impact of these affordable, customizable glasses on underserved children in Ensenada, Mexico, helping meet vision needs in areas with limited access to care. 🎉 Congratulations to Ken Lin, MD, PhD , and UCI Medical Student Christopher Yang for winning the Best Poster Award at the annual American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) Meeting! 🎉 Their poster highlights an innovative convolutional neural network (CNN)-based Android smartphone app designed to assist non-English speaking patients with glaucoma and low visual acuity (VA) in identifying topical medications more accurately. 🔍 Key Findings: Significant improvement in medication identification accuracy using the app. Similar average medication identification time with or without the app. Patients who struggle most with medication identification without the app showed greater improvements in accuracy and speed. 💡 Clinical Relevance: This app holds the potential to enhance glaucoma treatment adherence for patients with low health or language literacy, leading to better treatment outcomes. 👏 Well done to Dr. Lin and Christopher Yang for this incredible contribution to advancing ophthalmic care! #UCIHealth #GavinHerbertEyeInstitute #Ophthalmology #AAO2024 #Glaucoma #Innovation #Healthcare #MedicationAdherence #VisionCare

🎉 John Graether, MD, Makes $1 Million Gift to Establish Pediatric Ophthalmology Fellowship at UCI's Gavin Herbert Eye Institute! We are honored to announce that Dr. John Graether, a pioneering ophthalmologist and innovator, has made a remarkable $1 million donation to establish the Irene and John Graether, MD Endowed Vision Fellowship at UC Irvine. This fellowship will provide yearlong training in pediatric eye surgeries, ranging from treating preemies with detached retinas to addressing strabismus in teens and adults. Dr. Graether is renowned for his contributions to ophthalmology, including developing key surgical tools like the Graether collar button iris retractor and pioneering techniques like the continuous circular capsulotomy. His generosity will help shape the next generation of pediatric ophthalmologists at the UCI School of Medicine and the Gavin Herbert Eye Institute. Fellows will be mentored by Dr. Graether’s protégé, Donny W.
