Today, students, faculty, and staff with The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) School of Dentistry and Cizik School of Nursing at UTHealth Houston teamed up to give back to those who gave to us at the 10th annual #GiveVetsASmile event, where over 100 veterans from across the Houston area received free dental care. #ThankYouForYourService

A warm congratulations to Susan H. Fenton, PhD, professor at McWilliams School of Biomedical Informatics at UTHealth Houston who was named a 2024 Triumph Award winner by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). Fenton was selected as the 2024 Distinguished Member, which is AHIMA’s highest honor. The Triumph Awards “recognize individuals who have made a difference in the health information profession, through building our knowledge base, or by preparing future health information professionals and encouraging fresh talent and new leadership.” Fenton has dedicated over three decades of her career to the field of health information. “I’m incredibly honored to receive this recognition from AHIMA,” Fenton said. “The Distinguished Member Triumph Award celebrates both my professional journey and the essential role of data and information in transforming care delivery and advancing health informatics and information management.” Fenton has earned numerous awards and accolades from AHIMA and the Texas Health Information Management Association (TxHIMA) during her career. Fenton has been an AHIMA Fellow since 2011, and in 2012, she won an AHIMA Triumph Award for Research. In 2019, she earned the TxHIMA Legacy Award, which is the association’s highest honor. “I hope my lasting impact within AHIMA is to underscore the absolute centrality of data and information to health, ensuring that every decision in healthcare is informed by accurate, reliable, and actionable data,” Fenton said.

It was his wife, Violet, who first introduced Myron Loop, now 78, to woodworking. She found an old coat rack while on a mission to furnish a house they had just purchased, so she asked Myron to refurbish it for her. He made the coat rack look brand new and then made 26 more. Before long, he taught himself to build furniture from magazines and discovered it was his passion. But in 1997, Violet suffered a stroke and could no longer walk. He became her full-time caretaker, retired from his job, and focused on her health, so much so that he completely neglected his own. After she died in 2020, he spent the next few years in a lonely, isolated state of mind and, in a world that had shut down during COVID-19, he lost the motivation to do anything he once cared about and began suffering from chronic illnesses. Now, he is reconnecting with his art and making his health a priority again after seeking help from a geriatric physician at #UTHealthHouston . Philanthropy transforms lives and creates opportunities for students at #UTHealthHouston . Meet Cabrina Becker, an inspiring 4th-year medical student at McGovern Medical School . As she prepares to apply for a residency in OB/GYN, she is also set to graduate with a dual degree with a Master of Public Health from The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) School of Public Health . A generous scholarship allows Cabrina to pursue her passions while alleviating the financial burden. This support enables her to focus on what truly matters — her education and the communities she aims to serve. “Being here means changing the future of my family and inspiring students like me to keep going,” said Cabrina, a first-generation college graduate. “My goal is to incorporate my medical background and education in public health into a holistic practice.” #PowerofPhilanthropy

A poignant Walk to End Alzheimer’s Garden Wall was created at McGovern Medical School in advance of Saturday’s official Alzheimer's Association® walk. People were invited to share how they have been impacted by the disease, which affects an estimated 6.9 million Americans age 65 and older. Researchers with The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) School of Public Health have been awarded a $2.5 million grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to establish a multidimensional surveillance system for congenital heart defects (CHD). In partnership with Baylor College of Medicine and the School of Public Health’s Center for Health Care Data, the team will analyze critical outcomes such as age-specific mortality, health care disparities, and the role of respiratory viruses in CHD occurrence. “It represents one of the most comprehensive CHD surveillance systems in Texas, particularly in its ability to capture data on diagnoses and procedures across diverse populations,” said Jenil Patel, MBBS, MPH, PhD, assistant professor and co-investigator on the award. “This collaboration will be critical to developing more effective health care strategies for managing CHDs.” Read more about the award here: https://lnkd.in/gwhGwhnN
