Researchers think meltwater beneath Martian ice could support microbial life. Microbes could find a habitat beneath layers of ice on the surface of Mars. Aditya Khuller, who joined APL-UW this month, writes that on Mars there’s enough sunlight on dusty ice to create subsurface meltwater pools, just as on Earth. “If we’re trying to find life anywhere in the universe today, it’s one of the most accessible places." https://lnkd.in/g-Z6N55K

Congratulations to our Applied Physics Laboratory-UW supported students, Nicole P. and Dylan Wesen on their win at this year's IEEE Radar Conference Challenge and a big thank you to Analog Devices Jon Kraft for making the contest possible. NASA has announced four finalists for the next generation of Earth-observing satellites, each to receive $5 million to conduct a one-year concept study as they advance to the next selection stage. APL-UW glaciologist Ben Smith is on the EDGE team, led by the University of California, San Diego. EDGE proposes a new laser instrument to measure the height and three-dimensional structure of terrestrial ecosystems and the surface topography of glaciers, ice sheets, and sea ice as they are changing in response to climate and human activity. Two winning concepts will be implemented fully, with mission launches scheduled for the early 2030s. https://lnkd.in/gTvP3NVx
