"I earned my BS in business administration in December from my local college. I had no idea I would be graduating with my MBA from WGU just six months later. I am now the first person in my immediate family to earn both a bachelor's and a master's degree. Happy National #NursePractitionerWeek 🎉 Tabitha B., a recent WGU Master of Science, Nursing - Family Nurse Practitioner (BSN to MSN) graduate, shared her story with us to honor the profession 💙 “I began my career in the military. I went into the Marine Corps when I was 17 years old and spent eight years there. When I got out, I needed a way to support myself and realized that my passion is truly in serving and helping others. I decided that healthcare would be a great place for me because I enjoy people, and I enjoy helping people, so I decided to go into nursing. I got married, had seven children, and then decided to go back to WGU to earn my degree as a nurse practitioner. . . . “I knew that as a nurse practitioner, I would have the opportunity to serve in leadership and the opportunity to educate. I felt like if I was going to do this, I was going to go the whole way, with the ability to practice, educate, and lead. The nurse practitioner track was really just that overall umbrella that I felt was going to give me the advantage no matter what I chose to do.” We’re grateful for nurse practitioners everywhere who work tirelessly to care for others, lead with integrity, and bring kindness to every patient they serve. In honor of Veterans Day, we’re proud to celebrate our first two Night Owls to graduate through WGU’s partnership with the U.S. Naval Community College! Joseph Harding and Jonathon Maldonado both earned their Associate of Science in Cybersecurity and Information Assurance through this partnership, yet their paths to military service were unique. “I just felt that was what I was called to do,” says Joseph Harding about why he chose to serve. His grandfather was a Marine during the Korean War, his dad was in the Army, and he had multiple other family members who served in varying capacities. Jonathon Maldonado, on the other hand, was a kitchen director at Chick-fil-A before he joined the Navy. He says, “Once I started going down that path, I realized that I wouldn’t be able to really venture into other aspects. My wife encouraged me, knowing that I wanted to join the Navy, to give that a try, do my four years, and go pursue Chick-fil-A afterwards. Now, I’m at five years approaching six [in the military], and here we are.” When asked to share advice for other students in the military, Joseph advises, “Start college now. You never know what’s around the corner, and especially with the educational opportunities that are starting to mature for service members. . . .
