Axle is an energy flexibility startup. Our platform connects EVs, batteries, and heat pumps to electricity markets to help kick fossil fuels out of the grid.

Axle Energy has been chosen as a Top 30 Software Innovator in Energize Capital's Electrify Everything 2024. 

There's no way to recover from climate change without electrifying everything: transport, heat, industry. This is an obvious revolution in hardware: wind turbines, solar cells, batteries. It's also a less-obvious revolution in software: Axle's platform keeps the grid humming along with all of those renewables, EVs, and batteries.

Britain's new government wants to get the electricity sector to Net Zero by 2030. 

This is a fantastic target, but we won't hit it by simply churning out more renewable kWh. In order to keep the grid balanced, we're going to need to invest in clean ways to manage dips in supply - which is where demand-side flex will be crucial.

What happens to the electricity grid as we connect up more and more renewables, EVs, and heat pumps? ☀️

Electricity demand will double over the next decade (the previous doubling took over fifty years). 📈 

This creates constraints on the grid, where the existing infrastructure struggles to cope. 

The ‘traditional’ solution is construction, and lots of it. If we follow this path, we’ll need to triple the size of the grid, which is already longer (in miles of wires) than the UK’s road network. 🛣 

Flexibility provides an alternative. 

An asset, such as an EV charger, can agree to not charge during a constraint. This has the potential to halve the necessary grid improvements, saving tens of billions of pounds. 💸 

Distribution Network Operators (DNOs), responsible for the ‘local’ electricity grid, procure flexibility to ease these constraints at a lower cost and lower CO2 than the alternative.

It’s a win-win for smaller-scale assets like EVs - you get paid to help the grid, while paving the way for the many millions of forthcoming EVs and electrified homes. 💪
