LiNa Energy was created as a spin-out of Lancaster University, where the founders Dr Gene Lewis and Dr Richard Dawson combined their expertise in ceramics and electrochemistry and applied this to the problem of energy storage. 
Since then, the company has developed an innovative solid state sodium-based battery technology which offers superior safety and sustainability standards compared to lithium-based batteries.

Project PEEKaboo - Full update 📣 Last week, we shared insights into our Impact Accelerator Program, ‘Project PEEKaboo,’ led by Lancaster University and supported by Victrex , with funding from the IAA. This project focused on assessing the suitability of PEEK (Polyether-ether-ketone), a high-performance engineering polymer, for use within LiNa Energy ’s advanced cell assembly units. PEEK is chemically resistant, provides electrical insulation and offers mechanical stability, even at the high temperatures required by LiNa. However, there is limited data available for this material at our application temperatures. We’re therefore delighted to share these key outcomes from testing PEEK’s performance at 200°C+ ⬇ ✅ Proven Feasibility: Successfully 3D-printed PEEK components for LiNa’s cell assemblies, with functional prototypes developed and tested. 🛠️ 3D-Printing Best Practices: Created a comprehensive set of best practices for 3D-printing PEEK to ensure quality and consistency. 🌡️ In-Depth Material Insights: Gained a thorough understanding of PEEK’s mechanical properties and thermal creep behaviour, applicable to both 3D-printed and traditionally manufactured forms, at LiNa’s operational temperatures. 📊 New Material Database: Developed a previously unavailable database of 3D-printed PEEK properties, capturing data for temperatures exceeding 200°C. 🔍 Predictive Modeling Capability: Built and validated a computational model to accurately predict the mechanical and thermal creep behaviour of 3D-printed PEEK at elevated temperatures. If you can’t have a bit of fun in the lab on Halloween, when can you? 🎃👻 Usually when you 3D print, you're working with plastic - great for most things - like this ghoulish build. However, you can’t use most conventional plastics when you're dealing with the high temperatures (250°C+) that our batteries operate at. That’s why we use PEEK, a traditional well-known wonder material with significant thermal stability and chemical compatibility properties. We just wrapped up our impact accelerator program, ‘Project PEEKaboo,’ led by Lancaster University and supported by Victrex . We’ll share more details next week, so keep your eyes peeled 👀. Dawid and his wife adopted the pair from an animal shelter eight months apart. Despite the gap, Brusia and Bella quickly became inseparable. Earlier this year Will Tope spoke on a panel at the Energy Tech Summit in Bilbao, Spain. He was on a panel discussing the future of solid-state batteries with Arfa Karani, PhD, Casper Peeters , Yan Zhu and Mike O'Kronley . There were a couple of key issues that were discussed, which remain increasingly important right now ⬇️ 🔀Pathways to Commercialisation Identifying what customers actually want from solid state batteries and the timeframe and pathways to adoption. It's critical to zoom in on a limitation of incumbent tech, and find a partner who finds that weakness very painful. 📈How we nurture transparent and holistic data sharing Avoiding the temptation to rely on isolated KPIs and ensuring we are informing the industry as better informed investors and customers are good for everyone.
