CEN and CENELEC are active participants of the High-Level Forum on Standardization. In this capacity, on Friday 8 November, we were proud to host the workshop of the Workstream 6 on Low-Carbon Cement (LCC) in our premises in Brussels. Standardization in this area is key for the decarbonization of the European construction industry. The decarbonization of cement brings both challenges and opportunities – including the importance of ensuring safety throughout the whole lifecycle. During the event, the audience learnt about the objectives and recommendations developed by the WS6, but also about some still open questions: how to approach the new standardization needs- via constituents or based on the performance of the cements? Should the possible new performance-based standards be used for new products only? What is the most efficient way to associate concrete (and possibly other application) stakeholders to the ongoing reflections? Speakers also shared their ideas about many other topics, including the EU projects related to Low-Carbon Cement, international standardization, use of standards as policy tools, a decarbonization roadmap for LCC, and the need for a common definition of the “near-zero emissions and low-emissions cement production”. The workshop saw the participation of the following speakers: Ollivier marfaing (France’s Ministry of the Economy), Gabriella Sestini (DG GROW), Oscar Nieto Sanz (DG GROW), Ruben Snellings (ECOS), Xavier Guillot (CEN/TC 51), Stela Ivanova (Germany), Joren Verschaeve (ECOS), Marko Erdeljac, MBA (Croatia), Susan McGarry McGarry ( Ecocem Global ), Rob van der Meer ( CEMBUREAU ), Andrew Ruttinger ( International Energy Agency (IEA) )

🔷 Yesterday, Thursday 7 November, CEN and CENELEC Director General Elena Santiago Cid , alongside ETSI President Jan Ellsberger , was invited by the Hungarian Presidency to speak at the Council of the European Union Working Party for Telecommunications and Information Society. The meeting was an opportunity for in-depth discussions on the strategic importance of standardization and for Member States to learn more about recent development in ICT Standardization. CEN and CENELEC emphasized the key role of the Council in ensuring that European Legislation is consistent with regards to European standards and called for policymakers to engage with European Standardization Organizations (ESOs) as early as possible. #truststandards
