Our new joint report with Bio-based Industries Consortium (BIC) reveals alarming findings 🚨 Despite mandatory collection starting January 2024, almost 75% of #biowaste still ends up in landfills or is incinerated 🏭🔥 Four years after our first study, progress is slow: EU27+ bio-waste capture has only increased from 16% to 26% of its theoretical potential - representing a massive missed opportunity for the bio-based industry. As Jack McQuibban , ZWE's Head of Local Implementation, notes: "What is evident is the need for revised EU legislation that sets legally binding targets for the quality of bio-waste captured, and a cap on residual waste generation per capita, which would incentivise better bio-waste collection and treatment across the EU-27." We need a European Commission for the challenges of the future. And the biggest challenge is living within the limits of our planet 🌍 The hearings of the newly appointed European Commission are upon us. Through their questioning, we ask Members of the European Parliament to ensure that EU Commissioner-designate candidates with portfolios related to resource sufficiency and circular economy are ready for this challenge and its responsibilities. ✅ In practice, and among other things, this means having a vision and plan to ensure: ↳ A strategic use of materials and resources. ↳ Products designed for circularity, quality, and durability. ↳ Quality jobs for all, in line with the principles of Just Transition. ↳ Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) as a tool for waste prevention and reduction. ↳ An EU Single Market with circularity at its core, increasing the EU's resilience against import shocks. ↳ A healthy circular economy that prioritises human health by phasing out harmful substances and promoting non-toxic material cycles. Big congratulations to the island of Krk in Croatia, which just became the first Zero Waste Certified island by the Mission Zero Academy in the country! 🎉 This fantastic news would not have been possible without the support of, among others, ZWE's member organisations Zelena akcija / FoE Croatia, which mentored Krk municipalities' efforts in this certification, and Ekologi brez meja / Ecologists Without Borders Association , which acted as the Certification Auditor for this process.
