Kasvu Therapeutics 
early-stage drug development company founded in 2023. Building on a breakthrough discovery by its founders at the University of Helsinki, the company has developed novel rapid acting neuroplastogens for the treatment of various mental, behavioral and neurodevelopmental disorders, such as depression.

AIATELLA 
transforms cardiovascular diagnostics by harnessing AI to automate quantification, detection, and interpretation of medical images across multiple imaging modalities. Their technology boosts efficiency, ensures standardized analysis, and enables precision medicine, addressing the global challenges of radiologist shortages and the rising burden of cardiovascular diseases.

NextInox
develops and commercializes new stainless steel technologies to enhance the performance level of existing grades and to create new ones for the future. Applications for these materials range from household products to high-end technical solutions and provide value through the whole supply chain and product life cycle in a sustainable manner.

NADMED Ltd.
a spinout from the University of Helsinki, has revolutionized the measurement of NADs, vital molecules that act as the energy readout of cells. These molecules are linked to several diseases, including heart disease, metabolic disorders, and cancer. With the only CE-marked medical device for NAD measurement, NADMED offers the most advanced and accurate method available.

Thestra
A spinout from over a decade of research at Turku University and Turku University Hospital, THESTRA specializes in cancer diagnostics. With its patented EPLINEx™ technology, the company brings groundbreaking solutions to market, uniquely identifying life-threatening head and neck cancer cases where diagnostic options are lacking. THESTRA focuses on enabling personalized cancer medicine through precise patient-specific diagnostics and therapy stratification solutions.

RNatives
a spinout from the University of Eastern Finland, is leading the way in the exciting field of microRNA (miRNA) technology. They use unique, patented nuclear miRNAs to control how specific genes behave, opening new doors for treating complex diseases. Their platform, which will soon integrate AI for even more accuracy, has the potential to change how we approach and treat a wide range of health conditions.

We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Barry Merriman to Nordic Science Investments advisory board! 🎉
 
I have had the privilege of working with Barry in the past, and his vision for future breakthroughs is truly inspiring. He is now building his second deep tech company, Avery, which focuses on developing novel chip technology in synthetic biology. Barry has always been at the forefront of pushing the boundaries of knowledge and innovation.

Barry brings over 35 years of experience in leading major multi-disciplinary R&D programs. He was the Lead Architect for Advanced Sequencing Technology at Life Technologies, leading over $1 Billion in R&D efforts, including the development of the first semiconductor chip-based DNA sequencer. He also spearheaded national-scale genome sequencing programs, including for the US military.
 
His background includes serving as VP of Global Technology Assessment at Human Longevity, founded by genomics pioneer Dr. Craig Venter. Barry has co-founded companies focused on semiconductor chip devices for biosensor and genetic engineering applications.
 
Barry has a rich academic history, having served 20 years on the UCLA faculty and contributing significantly to genomic technology, including sequencing the first cancer genome. His academic research also spanned a broad range of disciplines, from engineering and computer science to math and physics. With over 100 scientific publications and 50 patents, his work is internationally recognized. He has a PhD in Applied Mathematics from The University of Chicago, and a BS in Mathematics and BS in Physics from the University of Washington in Seattle.

Last week we had the pleasure of joining Latitude59 and a panel to discuss the development of healthcare, the ecosystem and innovations in the field. It was a great trip with Alexandra Gylfe PhD MBA from the newly launched Nordic Science Investments .

The panel “Technology leading the next healthcare revolution: Insights of Scandinavian best practices” was co-organized by Merilin Varsamaa from Technopol and TalTech – Tallinn University of Technology, two leading organizations in the Estonian healthcare development ecosystem. In addition to Vertical's Co-founder and CEO Kenneth Salonius and Alexandra Gylfe, the panel was joined by Ain Aaviksoo from HeBA Clinic and Priit Kruus from Dermtest.

🔸 We concluded that while the healthcare systems are under turmoil in many countries, technology is an opportunity to seek relief.
🔸For innovators, it means being able to identify the right problems, but also understanding and addressing these through solutions that fit into the overall value chain.
🔸There seems to be little choice than moving towards value based care, which to be successful requires to e.g. look more at long-term health outcomes from a payers perspective, and for innovators to be ready to share the risk of successful outcomes.
🔸While the primary task of healthcare in most countries is to treat patients, in the future it could be beneficial to also make it a task and incentivise participation in the development of new innovative solutions. Not only could this foster a culture of development, it would directly support better alignment between problems and solutions in the healthcare systems.
