Applications to our Internet Freedom Fund are open and accepted on a rolling basis! Organizations or individuals are encouraged to submit a concept note -- the first step in a two-step process -- for innovative global internet freedom projects that counter censorship or surveillance that are focused on technology development, applied research, digital security, or events and community convenings. The @Open Technology Fund team evaluates applications based on: 1. Does the proposal fit within our remit? 2. Does the proposal solve an existing problem or pre-empt a rising problem? What is the real-world applicability? 3. Is it cost effective? 4. Will the project endure beyond the life of OTF's support? 5. Is the proposed project complementary to existing efforts? Media organizations, NGOs, and others need a secure way to receive anonymous documents from sources. Freedom of the Press Foundation 's open source whistleblower submission system SecureDrop fills this need. It receives documents via the Tor network (a distributed network of relays that protects users’ privacy), records only the date and time of the transfer, and enables recipients to view submissions in its “Secure Viewing Station”—an air-gapped machine with no internet connection. There, recipients can decrypt an encrypted submission, strip a document of any identifying metadata (or malware), and export or print a file after processing it. Through these measures, SecureDrop obscures the location of the source and helps protect the receiving organization from outside surveillance. To ensure SecureDrop is as safe as possible for users, Open Technology Fund 's Security Lab partner 7ASecurity audited the system. Overall, auditors found that SecureDrop is well-protected against a broad range of threats. Three vulnerabilities were identified, which the SecureDrop team has fixed.
