Scientists have demonstrated a new way to use high-energy particle collisions to reveal subtle details about the shapes of atomic nuclei. ⚛️ #RHIC #Physics

In 2002, Brookhaven chemist Raymond Davis Jr. won The Nobel Prize in Physics for detecting solar #neutrinos , ghostlike particles produced in the nuclear reactions that power the sun. "Neutrinos are fascinating particles, so tiny and fast that they can pass straight through everything, even the earth itself, without even slowing down," said Davis at the time of his Nobel award. "When I began my work, I was intrigued by the idea of learning something new. The interesting thing about doing new experiments is that you never know what the answer is going to be!" In 1961, Davis pioneered the detection of solar neutrinos with an experiment 2,300 feet underground in an Ohio limestone mine, later expanding his efforts with a groundbreaking detector 4,800 feet underground in the Homestake Gold Mine in South Dakota. His research revealed only one-third of the neutrinos predicted by theory, igniting the "solar neutrino puzzle" that challenged physicists for decades. His findings inspired experiments worldwide, which eventually confirmed that neutrinos oscillate between forms — proving they have mass and reshaping our understanding of particle physics. Welcome to the nation's largest tape archive for data from nuclear and particle physics experiments. 🖥️ ⚛️ Our Scientific Data and Computing Center has reached a major milestone: It now stores more than 300 petabytes of #data . 300 petabytes — or 300 million gigabytes — would equal six or seven million movies. Since the first movie was made in 1888, humans have generated some 500,000 movies. So, all the feature films ever created would fill only a small percentage of our storage. Written history, starting from Sanskrit to today, would fill just 50 petabytes. We have six times more data. Beyond nuclear and particle physics experiments, the Center is the nation's third largest in terms of scientific data overall. So, what generates all this data? The current cache comes from experiments at #RHIC and the #ATLASExperiment at CERN . These two colliders each smash protons and/or atomic nuclei together at nearly the speed of light, thousands of times per second, to explore questions about the nature of matter and fundamental forces. Detectors collect countless characteristics of the particles that stream from each collision and the conditions under which the data were recorded. And every single byte of this data is online, available for collaborators around the world to access. #BrookhavenCS
