Over 14,000 people in Fresno County are living with Alzheimer's, and it's estimated that more than 720,000 Californians 65 and older are living with the brain disorder. This year, CIRM joined the Alzheimer's Association® #Walk2EndAlz in Fresno/Madera, meeting with the community to raise awareness about the potential of stem cells in Alzheimer’s research. To date, CIRM has provided $35 million in funding to support Alzheimer's research using stem cells to better understand the disease and explore the development of cell and gene therapies to treat it.

Eugenio Cingolani , MD, at Cedars-Sinai , is pioneering a new, noninvasive therapy for ventricular tachycardia (VT), a severe heart rhythm disorder. Supported by a $6 million CIRM grant, Dr. Cingolani’s research uses stem cell-derived exosomes to promote heart healing and reduce scarring. This therapy could provide a safer, more effective solution for VT patients without damaging healthy tissue.

We ran into some CIRM Bridges trainees from Berkeley College at the SACNAS NDiSTEM Conference, the country's largest multidisciplinary and multicultural STEM diversity conference. To date, CIRM has supported Berkeley City College with nearly $5 million in funding to help train the next generation of stem cell scientists in California. Arjun Deb, MD, and his team at the UCLA Broad Stem Cell Research Center have developed an experimental therapy that could redefine heart repair after heart attacks and potentially reduce the likelihood of heart failure. This innovative therapy, funded in part by CIRM, works by blocking the ENPP1 protein, which is linked to scarring that hinders heart recovery.

Thank you to everyone who attended our 7th Annual Alpha Clinics Network Symposium, hosted by Cedars-Sinai on Oct. 25 in West Hollywood. The Symposium brought together 150 leaders from California’s top medical centers, the FDA , patient advocates, and scientists—all united in their commitment to advance regenerative medicine treatments for patients. The symposium sessions fostered meaningful discussions on improving clinical trial accessibility, innovative trial designs, and the future of cell and gene therapy. Thank you to the wonderful panelists who participated in the #AlphaClinics Symposium Patient and Advocacy Perspectives session. The panel was kicked off by a keynote speech from Lauren Miller-Rogen of Hilarity for Charity (HFC) during which she shared her story as a patient advocate and how her charity is bringing light to Alzheimer's. The session—moderated by Catriona Jamieson of UC San Diego Sanford Stem Cell Institute —also highlighted the perspectives of patient advocates Kristin Macdonald of Second Vision, Katie Sharify of CIRM, and Kim Cade of @Sister's Hope Foundation (not pictured).

“By awarding arguably the largest grants ever funded to study these effects of air pollution, CIRM is making a huge investment into chemical biology at Scripps Research and also human health—in this case, to study climate change’s impact on these major diseases that affect both the young and old,” says Stuart Lipton , MD, PhD. He and his team were awarded $17.5 million for the research project. In addition, Xin Jin, PhD , associate professor in the Department of Neuroscience and the Dorris Neuroscience Center, and her team—alongside colleagues at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies and UC San Diego —were awarded more than $11 million to uncover how different cell types and epigenetic networks are impacted by risk genes implicated in human neuropsychiatric disorders.
