The purpose of FRA is to: promulgate and enforce rail safety regulations; administer railroad assistance programs; conduct research and development in support of improved railroad safety and national rail transportation policy; provide for the rehabilitation of Northeast Corridor rail passenger service; and consolidate government support of rail transportation activities.

As a part our grantee outreach, FRA Midwest Region Chief of Outreach & Project Delivery Matthew Mielke joined Michigan Department of Transportation , CPKC , Amtrak , and the City of Detroit to tour the historical Michigan Central Station. During the visit, FRA received a first-hand look at Amtrak’s future expansion plans to offer passenger rail service between Toronto and Detroit.

Last month, FRA Equal Opportunity Specialist Hugo Vives joined Amtrak Senior Director of Accessibility Lonnie Murray in Westport, New York to celebrate passenger station accessibility updates. Using $3 million in funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, Amtrak opened its newly compliant Americans with Disabilities Act renovated station in Westport, NY. The station on Main Street services passenger rail commuters between New York City and Montreal and received a newly paved parking lot, a heated platform, and a wheelchair lift.

Last week, FRA announced 122 new projects through our CRISI Program. These investments benefit communities in every region of the country and the workers who operate, repair, and maintain rail infrastructure and equipment. In addition to infrastructure upgrades, last week’s CRISI grants will invest more than $53.5 million in workforce development activities, creating new apprenticeship programs, expanding train opportunities, establishing partnerships with universities, and advancing innovative research to strengthen our current workforce and contribute to its growth. These investments are the latest in a series of actions under the Biden-Harris Administration to support our country’s rail workforce and invest in the hardworking Americans who are essential to moving people and goods safely and efficiently every day.

The Corridor Identification and Development (CID) Program, established by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, will support sustained long-term passenger rail development that connects communities throughout America. Under the CID Program, seven new high-speed rail corridors were selected. High-speed services are proposed to operate at speeds of up to 186 mph or greater, primarily or solely on new, dedicated alignments. FRA Administrator Amit Bose has been to rail yards, rail facilities, and joined roundtable discussions with workers across the country as part of FRA’s commitment to safety. Most recently, the Administrator was in Memphis, TN, where he met with workers and toured BNSF's Tennessee Yard.
