The Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC) is a U.S. government agency created by the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA) to protect pension benefits in private-sector defined benefit plans. The PBGC operates two separate insurance programs: the Single-Employer Program and the Multiemployer Program. The agency steps in to pay pension benefits if a plan is unable to do so.
