SRNL staff presented at the Savannah River Site Citizens Advisory Board’s November meeting. Stephanie Jacobs provided an overview of SRNL’s Regulatory Center of Excellence. Carol Eddy-Dilek gave updates on the Advanced Long-Term Environmental Monitoring Systems program. SRNL’s attendance at this meeting allows for open dialog with both board members and the general public and helps to build connections within the community.

DOE-Moab is currently developing a Groundwater Compliance Action Plan to address the groundwater contamination at Moab and continued long-term surveillance and maintenance. SRNL led a remedial strategy team to collaborate with Moab on developing a list of 13 recommended portfolios. The ultimate objective is to sustainably protect human health and the environment near the adjacent Colorado River. The efforts focused on characterizing areas of ammonium and uranium contamination through SRNL and partner laboratory technology deployments to create a compelling conceptual model of likely geochemical controls for GCAP development and acceptance. SRNL researchers are building on the lab's legacy of cutting-edge science to effectively immobilize nuclear waste in innovative ways. As part of the Center for Hierarchical Waste Form Materials, SRNL is leveraging its depth of experience in radiological waste management to explore new frontiers in the industry. https://lnkd.in/eCT_UJPe

SRNL recently named Christine Langton a laboratory fellow. Langton has contributed to lab success in various capacities for the duration of her career by leveraging her expertise in materials science, engineering and geochemistry to design several processes in environmental management, waste treatment, nuclear facility decommissioning and site closures. https://lnkd.in/gp4FRbun .

University of South Carolina sophomore Zachary Gardiner received the honor of Best of Show at yesterday’s BSRA University Research Poster Session. His research focuses on developing a thermochemical database for molten salt reactors. The BSRA University Research Poster Session included students from University of South Carolina, Georgia Institute of Technology , Clemson University and The University of Georgia presenting their research and networking with SRNL researchers. The session included a panel session with five SRNL early career researchers and postdocs answering questions and sharing their personal stories and experiences. Panelists included Sean Noble, PhD , Abigail Waldron , Caroline Granger, Corey Martin and Stephen Vicchio, PhD . Congratulations Zachary!

It's National STEM/STEAM Day! SRNL was super busy in October educating students and the community about why putting science to work matters. Local teachers were paired with 20 Team SRNL volunteers to deliver exciting classroom STEM demonstrations that engaged more than 440 students. The lab hosted a virtual tour for more than 150 students across the Central Savannah River Area where SRNL staff members spoke about their diverse backgrounds and functions at SRNL. SRNL volunteers delivered free STEM kits to local teachers introducing more than 4,950 students to STEM concepts. And SRNL participated in three STEM festivals in the CSRA engaging more than 3,800 people. STEM and STEAM education programs are important to pushing society forward, and these programs are fun and engaging ways to teach these subjects to students and engage with our community.
