Federally-supported agricultural research dates back to the 1862 Organic Act, which established what is now the USDA. The Organic Act charged the then-Commissioner of Agriculture “To acquire and preserve… all information he can obtain by means of books and correspondences, and by practical and scientific experiments…” ARS was founded in 1963 with the vision of leading America towards a better future by fulfilling this charge through agricultural research and information.

John Oxendine, of the Lumbee Tribe, performs a traditional native dance at the Unity Through Inclusion celebration at USDA Headquarters, in Washington, D.C. The USDA announced a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at the event with the University of North Carolina at Pembroke , an American Indian & Alaskan Native Serving Institution. The MOU aims to enhance educational and employment opportunities for students. The event also featured a smudging ceremony and presentation by the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina Culture Team to honor the new partnership, and underscore the importance of cultural heritage. #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth #AlaskaNativeHeritageMonth

The article “Safeguarding plant genetic resources in the United States during global climate change” was recognized by CSSA as one of the 2024 Outstanding Papers in Plant Genetic Resources. The article underscores the gradual impact of climate change on plant genetic resources management in U.S. genebanks, and the need for novel responses to continue conserving these resources.
